The brave match of Hanoi Police Club

Hanoi Police Club drew 2-2 with the team considered the strongest in the group, Beijing Guoan Club, on the first day of entering AFC Champions League 2 (evening of September 18).

With only 4 foreign players in the squad and a strength that was rated lower than the home team Beijing Guo'an, Hanoi Police Club (CAHN) chose the approach of "knowing yourself and knowing your opponent", when proactively playing tightly at home.

However, coach Alexandre Polking did not choose to play a deep defense, but instead pressed intensely in the middle to win the ball back. Thanks to a well-organized 3-5-2 formation with the duo Leo Artur and Dinh Bac in the front line, CAHN Club continuously attacked the space behind Beijing defender Quoc An.

One of them was converted into a goal in the 15th minute thanks to Vitao. Leo Artur made a clever run down the left wing, before exchanging passes with Dinh Bac and then turning in to finish. The ball bounced back and Artur took it back, then passed it back to Vitao for a long-range shot. A typical goal of the style of CAHN Club under Polking: clear, methodical coordination, with all players in the right position to finish the move.

CAHN's favorable position was also enhanced by the deadlocked play of Beijing Guo'an throughout the first half. The Chinese team controlled the ball better, but lacked the ability to approach the goal. Long passes could not overcome CAHN's defense with "poles" like Hugo Gomes or Adou Minh. On the contrary, CAHN's counter-attacks with 2 to 3 sharp passes through the line always made the home team... shiver. If they had been careful, CAHN could have led 3-0 in the first half.

The wastefulness made CAHN Club pay the price in the second half, with goalkeeper Nguyen Filip making two mistakes. In the 49th minute, the 1992-born goalkeeper could not catch Yang Liyu's long-range shot. Although the ball was not far from the position, Filip still fumbled and let the ball slip into the net. In the 65th minute, Filip's disastrous pass sent the ball straight to Zhang Yuning's feet, allowing the opponent to shoot into an empty net, raising the score to 2-1.

After Leo Artur and Dinh Bac's shots hit the post twice, midfielder Rogerio Alves took advantage of a messy situation in the penalty area to beautifully equalize the score 2-2. CAHN Club had a commendable match, when they maintained their defensive position under pressure from the home team Beijing Guo'an Club, while still trying to launch counter-attacks.

Coach Polking's students did not seek a draw, but actually played to win, trying to get 3 points on the field of the team that was considered the strongest in the group. The Vietnamese representative really played all out in their first time playing AFC Champions League 2, with a serious playing style and spirit. The 2-2 draw was an ideal start for CAHN Club. Dinh Bac and his teammates had good results, along with lessons (especially in staying focused and taking advantage of opportunities) for the Vietnamese team to play better in the upcoming matches.

In the second match taking place at 7:15 p.m. on October 2 at Hang Day Stadium, CAHN Club will play at home to welcome Tai Po, the team that beat MacArthur 2-1 on the opening day.
