On September 18, a previously unknown portrait by Pablo Picasso of one of his lovers was put up for auction in Paris (France) with a starting price of 8 million euros (9.5 million USD).
Titled “Bust of a woman with a flowery hat” , the painting depicts Dora Maar, a French photographer, painter and poet - Picasso's most famous muse.
This colorful work was painted by Picasso on July 11, 1943, and was purchased by a French collector (the grandfather of the current owners) in August 1944.
According to experts, this painting has never been published to the public and has never been exhibited, except in Picasso's studio in Paris.
Maar was Picasso's most important model and muse, with some 60 works inspired by her, including some of his most famous paintings, such as “The Weeping Woman,” “Portrait of Dora Maar,” and the oil painting “Guernica.”
Some sources say that the nine-year love affair between Ms. Maar and the famous painter Picasso helped rekindle the creative flame of this talented artist.
Picasso's works are often sold at very high prices. The Spanish artist's most expensive painting is the 1955 oil painting "The Women of Algiers (Version O)" which was sold for 179.4 million USD at Christie's auction house in New York (USA) in 2015./.
