Recently, MSc. Dr. Calvin Q Trinh, Director of HMR Rehabilitation and Bodybuilding Center, shared about the case of a 19-year-old male patient with severe scoliosis due to incorrect gym training.
The male student said he had been working out at the gym for over 2 years. During this time, he had been lifting weights of up to 200kg. Recently, he noticed that his upper body was clearly crooked, so he went to the hospital for a check-up and was diagnosed with 50-degree scoliosis.

According to the doctor, male patients with lumbar spine injuries are common in weightlifters. The heavier the weight, the higher the risk of injury. In some cases, lifting heavy weights incorrectly can lead to serious consequences, negatively affecting the practitioner's life later on.
How dangerous is it to lift weights incorrectly?
Weight lifting is a safe form of exercise that provides many benefits for bones and joints if done correctly. However, if you lift weights with the wrong posture and do not tighten your core muscles, you will unintentionally put a lot of pressure on your lumbar spine.
“In the long term, this can easily lead to back pain, curvature, sudden injury to the lumbar spine or worsening of lumbar disc degeneration,” said Dr. Calvin.
Therefore, to limit back pain and injury when lifting weights, people should warm up fully and choose the appropriate weight level for their ability, starting with low weights. At the same time, practitioners also need to build a strong enough muscle system before gradually increasing the weight level.
In addition, beginners should practice lifting weights with a coach or instructor to ensure proper technique and limit injuries.

First of all, scoliosis affects the patient's appearance, causing imbalance, postural and gait disorders, limiting activities, making the patient self-conscious and inferior in life.
