Ms. Kim Anh has volunteered to teach English for free to students in Ha Giang province since 2022. Students in remote areas do not have devices such as phones or personal computers, so the whole class studies through the television in the classroom. The connection is weak, and class time is often interrupted, but with the support of teachers at school, foreign language learning has never stopped over the past few years.

“At first, some students were shy and reluctant to interact. The teacher had to design online lessons flexibly, incorporating many interesting images, organizing games to create a fun and friendly atmosphere in each lesson. Each student boldly participated in games, interacted with the teacher and gradually became more confident. Even though the teacher and students were hundreds of kilometers apart, they knew each other by face and called each other by name affectionately and intimately,” she said.

The Change of a School

Mr. Phung Ngoc Oanh, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Ba Vi District, shared about the changes of teachers and students at a school nearly 100 kilometers from the capital, where students are mainly Muong and Dao ethnic groups, that is Khanh Thuong Primary School. According to Mr. Oanh, not long ago, when mentioning the implementation of teaching a subject for colleagues in the district to observe, many teachers were hesitant and did not dare to do it, while students were shy and timid.

Thanks to the support and expertise sharing of the Department of Education and Training of Ba Dinh district, after a period of time, teachers and students in Ba Vi district have had clear changes.

For over a year, teacher Pham Ngoc Anh from Kim Dong Primary School, Ba Dinh District has traveled hundreds of kilometers to Khanh Thuong Primary School twice a week to teach and share experiences in innovating the curriculum and textbooks. Thanks to the perseverance of Ms. Ngoc Anh and other teachers, Khanh Thuong Primary School has had students who are excellent at English at the district level and excellent teachers at the city level. This result is proof that the sharing between teachers and the school has brought unexpected results.

According to Mr. Oanh, currently 106/110 schools in Ba Vi district are implementing the program of connecting with schools in other districts. Teachers of the schools have organized hundreds of professional activities, participated in the English teachers club... Organized thousands of free review hours for students.

Closing the education gap

Ms. Nguyen Phuong Lan, Principal of Nguyen Trai High School, Ba Dinh District (Hanoi) said that in addition to efforts to promote the improvement of the quality of teaching hours in the school, the unit also expands exchanges and accompanies schools in disadvantaged areas.

These were exchanges and sharing sessions with Minh Quang High School (Ba Vi District) and Luu Hoang High School (Ung Hoa District), two schools with quite low entrance scores for grade 10, even recruiting students in excess. The question is, how can teachers teach and support students to achieve high quality output in 3 years of high school?

Nguyen Trai High School has conducted teaching sessions, observed activities, shared experiences in creating exercise sheets to improve the quality and effectiveness of teaching English; shared experiences in creating test and evaluation topics; exploited and used software to support teaching activities; donated funds to buy and instruct teachers at Minh Quang High School to use the multiple choice test mixing software.

“Through that exchange and connection, we also learned more than what we shared: lessons of perseverance, trust and professional pride from teachers at other schools. Despite many difficulties and even daily worries and concerns, each of us teachers understands that when we hold hands with others, we are also given more strength,” said Ms. Lan.

Mr. Tran The Cuong, Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, said that 3 years ago, those working in education management in the capital were extremely concerned and worried about having to solve the problem of narrowing the educational gap between suburban schools and inner-city schools. In reality, there was a large difference between schools in the same locality.
