As a tradition, every day at 3 pm, Mr. Phan Van Soi and his wife (living in Binh Tay commune, Tran Van Thoi district) board a boat carrying more than 100 traps to the embankment area to catch stone crabs.

Mr. Soi said that stone crabs usually live in flooded tree holes, rock holes, and concrete embankments. This is a type of seafood that thousands of people love because of its sweet, firm meat. Ca Mau stone crabs are a natural species that cannot be farmed, so to enjoy this specialty, people have to catch them by hand.

To catch stone crabs, the couple must first prepare bait. This is an important step to trap the crabs. This type of crab likes to eat bait that has a fishy smell.

Mr. Oak used a sharp iron bar to pierce the fish and then placed it in the middle of the crab trap.

To keep the trap from being washed away by the waves, people tied bricks to it. They also tied a string with foam to make it easier to identify when checking.

Early the next morning, Mr. Soi returned to get the traps. Thanks to this method, he caught an average of dozens of kilograms of stone crabs every day.

“Stone crabs are usually dark purple and dark gray. Their claws are dark purple or grayish white, and their legs have many soft hairs. Living in muddy alluvial soil and murky water, stone crabs change color to adapt to their living environment," said Mr. Soi.
