According to data from Quiver Quantitative, as of July 9th, Instagram's Threads app had over 100 million registered users, making it the fastest app to reach 100 million users in history. The app launched on July 5th and quickly attracted 30 million registrations in its first 24 hours. It then surged to 50 million and 70 million in less than two days.
| Threads surpassed 100 million subscribers in just 5 days after its launch. |
Earlier this year, the record belonged to ChatGPT - a super AI chatbot launched in late November 2022 that reached 100 million users by the end of January, surpassing TikTok (9 months) and Instagram (2.5 years).
However, Threads is still facing the challenge of retaining users because the app lacks many features. For example, the website interface only has a reading function and does not support article search, direct messaging, hashtags, or a Following panel.
According to Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri, Threads' approach differs from Twitter's, which focuses on news and current events. Threads aims for positive interaction between people and lighter topics.
Given the rapid growth of Threads, Twitter threatened to sue Meta for theft of trade secrets. However, Meta also asserted that the Threads development team did not include any former Twitter employees.
