The call came after Spain's national weather agency (AEMET) issued its highest level red alert - extremely dangerous - on September 3 in the Madrid region, Toledo province and Cadiz city.

According to AEMET, heavy rain with rainfall of up to 120 mm will last for 12 hours in the capital Madrid.

Sharing on social network X, Madrid Mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida urged people to stay indoors due to unusual weather conditions, with record-breaking heavy rain forecast.

Dark clouds covered the sky of the Spanish capital on the afternoon of September 3, but many people still went out with the intention of returning home before heavy rain was forecast in the evening.

Emergency services in Madrid have also sent text messages to city residents warning of the risk of flooding, advising people to avoid using vehicles in dangerous conditions.

La Liga has also postponed a match on the evening of September 3 between Atletico Madrid and Sevilla at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium due to the red alert.

Emergency services in the coastal cities of Alcanar and Tarragona also advised people to stay indoors due to flooding as up to 215mm of rain fell in the past 24 hours.
