The model of growing pink peach plums in netting has helped Mr. Tran Van Ut's family become prosperous.
Many years ago, Mr. Ut's family cultivated rice on 12,000 square meters of land, but the economic efficiency was not high. After researching and learning from successful economic models both locally and outside the area, about four years ago, Mr. Ut boldly converted more than 5,000 square meters of land to plant about 350 plum trees. According to Mr. Ut, he chose to plant plum trees because this variety has good growth, high yield, delicious fruit, is favored by consumers, and the price offered by traders is quite stable. On the other hand, the climate and sandy loam soil conditions are quite suitable for plum trees. During the cultivation process, he diligently learned knowledge and techniques from other orchards; he took advantage of training courses and technology transfer programs. Thanks to diligent care and proper methods, the plum orchard developed very well. After only 18 months, Mr. Ut harvested the first crop, achieving a high yield.
As he guided us through his fruiting plum orchard, Mr. Ut couldn't hide his joy at the fruits of his family's hard work. He recounted, "In the beginning, I intercropped plums with other crops like gourds, chili peppers, and watermelons to generate income of about 50-60 million VND per year. Once the plum trees grew, I focused solely on caring for them." On his 5,000 square meter plum orchard, Mr. Ut invested over 30 million VND in netting to protect the trees. According to him, although the initial investment was high, the netting lasts for about 5 years. The advantage of netting is that it reduces labor, saves on pesticide costs, and minimizes pests and diseases, especially fruit flies.
According to Mr. Ut, although the trees are grown in netting, farmers need to cultivate them according to proper technical procedures to ensure high yields. Before planting the pink peach plums, it is necessary to apply base fertilizer to provide nutrients and help the trees grow well. He plants each plum tree 3 meters apart, with trellises to support the branches, ensuring the plums do not break in strong winds and storms and providing good ventilation for the trees. From the time the plums bloom to harvest takes about 3 months. During the fruiting period until harvest, only 3 applications of pesticides are needed. After harvesting, the trees must be nurtured and fertilized to nourish the roots.
Currently, Mr. Ut manages his plum trees to bear fruit year-round; the larger the plum tree canopy, the higher the yield. Mr. Ut shared: “Pink peach plums are quite easy to grow, easy to sell, and have a stable price. On average, there are 3 peak fruiting seasons each year. If cared for using the right techniques, plums can yield 1.2 tons per hectare per season. Depending on the time, traders buy them at prices ranging from 4,000 to 22,000 VND/kg, bringing in profits many times higher than growing rice.” On average, Mr. Ut earns about 200 million VND per year from harvesting plums, helping his family stabilize their lives, become prosperous, and provide a good education for his two children. Not only has he enriched his own family, but he is also always ready to share information and exchange experiences with other orchards to help them increase their income.
