In a message to the people on July 26, President of the Cambodian People's Party (CPP), Prime Minister of the Royal Government of Cambodia Samdech Techo Hun Sen mentioned the possibility that Cambodia will have a new Prime Minister and the Royal Government will soon be established, after the overwhelming victory of the ruling Cambodian People's Party in the 7th National Assembly election on July 23.
"I will not continue to serve as Prime Minister and hope the people will understand this decision," Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said in a televised speech today.
Prime Minister Hun Sen announced that Hun Manet will be the leader of Cambodia's new government , with King Norodom Sihamoni set to announce the appointment in the coming weeks. Samdech Techo Hun Sen is expected to run for the position of President of the Royal Council of Cambodia. According to the CPP's plan, Samdech Techo Hun Sen will also run for the position of President of the Senate, replacing Samdech Say Chhum.

The Cambodian People's Party (CPP) won 6,398,193 votes (equivalent to 82.3% of the votes). The number of votes in favor of the royalist FUNCINPEC Party was 716,443 (equivalent to 9.22%). This result means that the CPP won 120/125 seats in the 7th National Assembly; the remaining 5 seats belonged to the FUNCINPEC Party.
