Mr Hipkins spoke to Mr Xi on Tuesday about "areas of direct bilateral cooperation such as trade, education, science and innovation, agriculture and tourism", according to a statement from the New Zealand Prime Minister's Office.
He also spoke about “the constructive role China can play in addressing common global challenges such as climate change and the conflict in Ukraine,” the statement added.
Mr Xi Jinping told Mr Hipkins that bilateral relations had "continued to develop in a healthy and stable manner, bringing clear benefits to the people of the two countries", according to state broadcaster CCTV.
Xi Jinping said the two sides should work together to "promote the long-term and stable development of the China-New Zealand comprehensive strategic partnership".
With New Zealand's economy slowing and an election scheduled for October, Mr Hipkins must boost growth if he is to convince voters.
Mr Hipkins also attended a signing ceremony to promote New Zealand dairy and meat products in China.
