Import, export value and trade balance between EU and US in 2023
The above information was released by President Trump on his personal social media platform. This is the next step in a series of tough trade actions that the "White House boss" has taken in the past week. Previously, he announced tariffs on imported goods from Japan, South Korea, Canada, Brazil and especially a 50% tax on copper - a strategic metal in high-tech manufacturing.
The latest move is said to have stunned traditional US trading partners, especially as the EU is hoping to resume negotiations on a comprehensive trade deal with Washington after years of hiatus.
EU response
On July 12, European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU still wants to cooperate to reach a trade agreement with Washington.
"Imposing a 30% tariff on EU exports would disrupt essential transatlantic supply chains, harming businesses, consumers and patients on both sides of the Atlantic," Ms von der Leyen stressed.
"We remain ready to continue our efforts towards a deal by August 1," the EC president added, warning that "we will take all necessary steps to protect EU interests, including by adopting proportionate countermeasures if necessary."
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof said on July 12 that the EU needs to maintain unity to reach a trade agreement with the US, in the context that President Donald Trump has just announced that he will impose a 30% tax on imported goods from the EU.
In a post on social network X, Mr. Schoof commented that "the US announcement of imposing 30% tariffs on imported goods from the EU is worrying", however, the European Commission (EC) "can count on our full support. As the EU, we must unite and firmly pursue a mutually beneficial outcome with the US".
Also on July 12, French President Emmanuel Macron called on the EU to speed up preparations for countermeasures, including the Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI), after Mr. Trump's announcement of a 30% tariff.
In a post on social network X, President Macron stressed: "More than ever, the EC's responsibility is to affirm the union's determination to firmly defend European interests."
The ACI allows the EU to respond to third countries that impose economic pressure on member states to change their policies, and also allows for a range of other actions. It also allows the EU to restrict access to public procurement by third country companies and to take measures related to trade in services or investment.
