Traders flock to buy papaya that has been "bombed" at high prices

On August 29, Mr. Nguyen Quang Trung - Director of Tay Hieu Agricultural Cooperative (Tay Hieu Commune, Thai Hoa Town, Nghe An) - said that in recent days, the papaya gardens of the cooperative members have been purchased by traders with a quantity of more than 70 tons.

Mr. Trung said that the price of papaya is increasing every day. Previously, papaya was only sold at 3,500 VND/kg, but now traders come to buy it at 6,000-7,000 VND/kg. Many garden owners have to hire more workers to pick it in time to sell, and some gardens have no more papaya to sell.

"Traders buy up all the ripe papayas in the garden. Currently, there are only about 130 tons of unsold green fruit left in the garden," said Mr. Trung.

According to Mr. Trung, this season may coincide with the full moon of July, high market demand leading to a sharp increase in papaya prices.

As Dan Tri previously reported, in November 2022, Nafoods Passion Fruit Joint Stock Company signed a contract with Tay Hieu Agricultural Cooperative to supply papaya seeds and purchase products. According to the contract, this company will purchase all papaya grown by Tay Hieu Cooperative for export to Russia at a price of 3,500 VND/kg.

After signing the contract, the members of the Cooperative improved the land and bought papaya seedlings to plant on an area of ​​over 13 hectares. By July, when the papayas were fully ripe, Nafoods Company did not purchase them as promised.

Nafoods Passion Fruit Joint Stock Company later sent a notice to terminate the economic contract with Tay Hieu Cooperative. The company representative said that the delay in purchasing papaya for people was due to objective impacts from the output market, beyond the control of the enterprise.

Currently, papaya ripens continuously and is purchased by traders at the garden for 6,000-7,000 VND/kg.

The company did not purchase, and people did not dare to harvest and sell on the market for fear of violating the contract, causing dozens of tons of ripe papaya on the trees to fall off, turn yellow, and rot. Many papaya gardens were also neglected, no longer fertilized, and the quality of the trees was affected.

On August 18, Nafoods Passion Fruit Joint Stock Company came to work and agreed to liquidate the contract, supporting all the money for seeds and care for Tay Hieu Agricultural Cooperative at the rate of 225 million VND/ha.

With more than 13 hectares of papaya grown under contract, Tay Hieu Cooperative received the full 3 billion VND in support payment on August 21.
