The UV index and heat index in Ho Chi Minh City are both at very high levels.

Accordingly, the ultraviolet (UV) index in Ho Chi Minh City on June 26 was at a very harmful level, especially between 10am and 1pm, when the index ranged from 7.5 to 9.1. The peak was at 12pm with an index of 9.1.

The potential maximum UV index in Ho Chi Minh City for the next 3 days is forecasted at level 9. In addition, the potential maximum heat index in Ho Chi Minh City is also forecasted at a very dangerous level (41-54). This level is very likely to cause heatstroke, exhaustion, and heat shock if exposed or engaged in prolonged physical activity in the heat.

In addition, some other provinces and cities have UV index at very harmful levels including Hue (Thua Thien-Hue), Da Nang, Hoi An ( Quang Nam ), Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa), Can Tho, and Ca Mau.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, a UV index of 3 to below 5 is considered moderately harmful, 6-8 is considered highly harmful, and 8 or above is considered very harmful.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a UV index below 2 is safe, 3-5 is moderate, 6-7 is high, 8-10 is very high and 11 or higher is extremely high and dangerous. WHO recommends that with a UV index of 8 or higher, people should avoid going out at noon, if outside, they should seek shade, wear long-sleeved shirts, apply sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that in the Northern region, the UV index is at a medium to high risk level; meanwhile, in the Central and Southern regions, this index is at a very high level, especially between 11am and 1pm. In the next three days, in the Northern region, the maximum UV index is forecast to increase again, reaching a high to very high risk level; in the remaining regions across the country, this index continues to be at a very high risk level.

Workers who work continuously outdoors in hot weather need to wear protective clothing.

The stronger the UV intensity, the greater the skin damage.

Master, Doctor Ta Quoc Hung (Department of Dermatology - Cosmetic Dermatology, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City) shared: UV rays, also known as ultraviolet rays, are colorless ultraviolet rays. UV rays are divided into 3 types: UVA, UVB and UVC. Of which, UVA can penetrate clouds, causing skin aging. UVB rays partially penetrate the ozone layer, causing skin burns. UVC rays cause skin cancer, but fortunately, they are absorbed by the ozone layer.

The UV index is an international standard measurement of the strength of ultraviolet rays from the sun, calculated from 1 to 11+. Depending on the level of exposure, the longer and higher the intensity of UV rays, the more damage will be caused to the skin. At a UV index of 7-8, the time it takes to burn the skin when exposed to hot sunlight is 30 minutes. And when the UV index is at 9-11, the time it takes to burn the skin is reduced to 10 minutes.

Therefore, people should limit going out, when going out, they should wear long-sleeved jackets, thick cotton material to cover, avoid sunlight from penetrating. Dark colored clothes will help protect better than light colored clothes. Wear a hat with a brim of over 3 cm to ensure coverage on the face, neck, chest. Use sunscreen with SPF from 30-50.
