According to SF, the upgrade was revealed through a video recently released by the Russian Ministry of Defense. The video shows a Su-30SM carrying at least two R-37M missiles, one in the front under the fuselage and one on the left wing. This Su-30SM took off from the Crimean Peninsula to patrol the Black Sea.
The Su-30SM was designed by Sukhoi Corporation to gain air superiority and attack enemy ground targets with a variety of weapons including air-to-air, air-to-ground, guided and unguided bombs with a total weapon load of up to 8,000kg.
The fighter is equipped with the N011M Bars radar with a maximum detection range of 400 km and a search range of 200 km. The radar's capabilities are sufficient to successfully guide the R-37M missile.
The R-37M air-to-air missile was developed by the Russian Tactical Missiles Corporation to engage all types of air targets day and night and in all conditions, including hostile electronic countermeasures, at very long ranges. The R-37M missile has a range of over 200 km and is capable of reaching hypersonic speeds (over Mach 5) in the terminal phase.
The R-37M missile uses a sophisticated guidance system. If the target suddenly changes course, the missile's trajectory can be adjusted from the fighter via a secure data link.
Previously, only the MiG-31BM interceptors, Su-35S multirole fighters and Su-57 stealth fighters of the Russian Aerospace Forces could be equipped with the modern R-37M missile. The upgraded Su-30SM with the ability to carry the R-37M missile has added to the power of the Russian Navy.
Several Ukrainian Air Force fighters have been shot down by R-37M missiles since Russia began its special military operation in Ukraine. A few days ago, a missile of this type hit a Ukrainian Su-27.
