I will always remember the times I met you.

During his lifetime, Vice President Nguyen Luong Bang visited and worked with officials and people in Hai Duong province, Thanh Mien district, and his hometown of Thanh Tung many times. Each visit left unforgettable memories with the local officials and people.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Pham, 74 years old, from Dong village, former Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and former Chairman of the People's Committee of Thanh Tung commune, recalls June 12, 1977, when Vice President Nguyen Luong Bang came to work with the leaders of Thanh Mien district. From early morning, commune officials were present at the district People's Committee hall to welcome him. "We stood in the back row of the hall. From afar, we could see the Vice President in a simple short-sleeved shirt and faded khaki pants. He smiled kindly and waved to everyone," Mr. Pham recalled.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Pham, former Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and former Chairman of the People's Committee of Thanh Tung commune, recounted his meeting with Vice President Nguyen Luong Bang in June 1977.

That day, Mr. Pham was very impressed with the directives of Vice President Nguyen Luong Bang. “Vice President Nguyen Luong Bang was very concerned about agricultural development and Party building. His directives at that time clearly showed the thinking of a strategist with a long-term vision, very decisive but also full of dedication. According to the schedule, Comrade Nguyen Luong Bang was supposed to have a private meeting with the Thanh Tung Commune Party Committee, but due to time constraints, he took the opportunity to give instructions and take a commemorative photo with the commune's officials,” Mr. Pham said.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tu, 78 years old and a Party member for 53 years, from Dong village, recounted how Vice President Nguyen Luong Bang visited his hometown many times during his lifetime. The Vice President's sister's family lived next door to his, so he had the honor of meeting the Vice President on several occasions. He remembers most vividly the time in 1969-1970, after Comrade Nguyen Luong Bang was elected Vice President. “That day, knowing that Uncle Ho was visiting his hometown, the villagers crowded into his yard. He asked, ‘Do our people like socialism?’ Everyone answered in unison, ‘Yes.’ Then he instructed the villagers to actively increase production and build agricultural cooperatives…,” Mr. Tu recalled.

Those who had the opportunity to meet Vice President Nguyen Luong Bang were deeply impressed by his very simple, open, and approachable demeanor. Despite his high position and busy schedule, every time he visited his hometown, he always took the time to greet his fellow villagers; encouraging and reminding them to remain united and close-knit.

A model of integrity

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tu recalled fond memories of Vice President Nguyen Luong Bang.

According to Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tu, in his youth he heard many stories about the exemplary thrift and integrity of Vice President Nguyen Luong Bang. This was around 1970-1976 when his father, then the Party Secretary of Thanh Tung commune, received two gifts from Vice President Nguyen Luong Bang: a radio and a stethoscope. “I was very impressed with Mr. Bang’s integrity. Despite being a high-ranking leader, the gifts he gave to his hometown were incredibly simple,” Mr. Tu added.

In Thanh Tung commune, many people still remember and share stories about the thrifty, honest, and upright character of Vice President Nguyen Luong Bang. These include the small house he chose for his family, located on a small street in Hanoi, which was not large by standard. Once, when visiting his children in evacuation in Son Tay, he didn't use a government vehicle but went to Kim Lien bus station to queue for a bus ticket like everyone else... When Comrade Nguyen Luong Bang passed away, his family voluntarily returned the villa at 5 Thien Quang Street, Hai Ba Trung District (Hanoi) to the State...

Mr. Vu The Tuan, Permanent Deputy Secretary of the Thanh Tung Commune Party Committee, said that cadres, Party members, and people of Thanh Tung are very proud of and admire the exemplary character, thrift, integrity, and selflessness of Vice President Nguyen Luong Bang. He will forever be a source of pride for the people of Thanh Tung in particular, and the heroic Dong region in general. His good name will remain with his homeland forever.
