Empowering impoverished households to rise above poverty.

Việt NamViệt Nam04/01/2024

From the livelihood support program for poor and disadvantaged ethnic minorities, the Fatherland Front at all levels in the province has implemented livelihood models suitable to the local situation. As a result, many models have yielded practical results, contributing to empowering poor and near-poor households in difficult areas of Dam Rong district to improve their lives.

In 2023, 167 poor households in disadvantaged communes of Dam Rong district received support for livelihood models.
In 2023, 167 poor households in disadvantaged communes of Dam Rong district received support for livelihood models.

In 2022, hundreds of poor and near-poor households in Dam Rong district received tens of billions of VND in financial support to implement programs to convert inefficient crop and livestock varieties to high-value crops and to support production development and preferential loans. In addition, many poor and near-poor households, especially in disadvantaged areas, also received support for livelihood models, helping people gradually improve their income and escape poverty sustainably. From provincial-level funding alone, Dam Rong district provided livelihood support to 455 poor and near-poor households with over 7.9 billion VND.

Together with provincial departments and agencies, in 2022, the Fundraising Committee for the Poor of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Lam Dong province allocated 4 billion VND to Dam Rong district. Based on this, the Standing Committee of the District Fatherland Front Committee coordinated with the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs to support livelihood models for 268 poor and near-poor households in four disadvantaged communes: Da Long, Da Tong, Da M'rong, and Lieng S'ronh. The livelihood models supported for the people were very specific and practical, including: support for agricultural tools, agricultural machinery, plant and animal breeds, scientific and technical knowledge…; of which 38 models supported silkworm farming tools, 44 models for building pigpens, and the remaining models supported local black pig breeds with 546 piglets for 91 households and durian seedlings and fertilizers for 95 households…

We visited the household of Mr. Tre K'Xuyen in Lieng Krac 2 village, Da M'rong commune. As a family facing difficult circumstances, in 2022, Mr. Tre K'Xuyen's family was one of the poor households in the commune that received support from Dam Rong district in the form of tools, sieving frames, and silkworm larvae to raise silkworms. Due to the limited mulberry area (1.5 acres), the family only raises 2.5 grams of silkworm larvae per batch, earning between 4 and 6 million VND per month. After more than two years of familiarizing themselves with mulberry cultivation and silkworm farming, the family's economy has improved significantly and now provides a fairly stable income.

Similarly, the family of Mr. Rơ Yam Ha Đôl in Đạ Nhinh 2 village, Đạ Tông commune, was previously classified as a poor or near-poor household, as their livelihood depended solely on a few acres of land for growing rice and corn. Furthermore, with a large family (9 children), their lives became even more difficult. However, since the implementation of the policy to diversify crops and livestock, in 2019, Mr. Ha Đôl's family boldly converted 5 acres of rice paddies to mulberry cultivation and silkworm farming. In 2020, they further converted all of their corn-growing land to coffee cultivation, which yielded its first harvest this year. “With 5 acres of mulberry trees, my family raises one box of silkworm larvae, earning 9-14 million VND per month. Based on these initial results, and with additional support from the authorities in providing production materials, silkworm farming tools, and knowledge and experience, my family and many other households in the commune have gradually escaped poverty and near-poverty. Thanks to silkworm farming, our family's economy is now much more stable than before. We not only have the means to care for our children's education but also to equip our home with household items such as beds, a TV, a refrigerator, a washing machine, and Wi-Fi. We are currently renovating 40 square meters of our house to expand the silkworm farming area. Furthermore, my family has encouraged and shared our silkworm farming experience with nearly 10 other households in the village,” said Mr. Rơ Yam Ha Đôl and his wife.

In addition to providing agricultural tools, seedlings, and livestock, people in the communes of the district also receive support in knowledge and experience in farming and animal husbandry. According to statistics, out of 268 poor and near-poor households supported by the Provincial Fatherland Front's livelihood models, 145 have escaped poverty. In 2023, Dam Rong district continued to receive over 3.3 billion VND from the Provincial Fatherland Front Committee to support 167 poor and near-poor households in disadvantaged communes with livelihood plans, helping people develop their economy, increase their income, gradually improve their lives, and achieve sustainable poverty alleviation.

According to Nguyen Quoc Huong, Head of the District Party Committee's Mass Mobilization Department and Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Dam Rong District: “Responding to the emulation movement "Joining hands for the poor, leaving no one behind," in recent years, the Fatherland Front at all levels in Dam Rong district has implemented many solutions to promote social welfare work, support and help poor households and households with difficult circumstances to improve their lives. The Fatherland Front at all levels in the district has focused resources to support housing construction, provide production equipment, livelihood models, scientific and technical knowledge, and seedlings to poor, near-poor, and households with difficult circumstances to develop production and gradually escape poverty sustainably. In 2023, from the "Fund for the Poor," national target programs, and social mobilization sources, the Fatherland Front at all levels in the district supported the construction of 259 new solidarity houses for poor and disadvantaged households with a total value of over 12.8 billion VND, helping poor people feel secure.” "Develop production, stabilize livelihoods."
