New access opportunities

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thanh Loi, Member of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Journalists Association , Editor-in-Chief of the Economic and Urban Newspaper, said: Press agencies in Vietnam are facing the risk of large-scale cyber attacks; the influence of social networks due to fake and unverified news sources; the increasing trend of personalization in receiving information; the change in the role and position of the public, from passive to active, both as consumers of press and media products and participants in the process of transmitting information.

In addition, the strong development of multimedia journalism, social media types such as electronic information pages, social networks (facebook, zalo, twitter, youtube...) has created fierce competition for journalism activities. The trend of forming multimedia media agencies is becoming more and more popular, requiring digital transformation at press agencies. In particular, the need for readers to update information quickly and accurately requires the press to innovate in technology, organization, etc.

In the above context, the Hanoi People's Committee assigned the Economic and Urban Newspaper to pilot a typical digital transformation model from management and operation at the agency, applying technological solutions such as AI, chatbot, virtual reality... Since October 2024, the newspaper has deployed the application of the converged newsroom model and digital ecosystem, focusing on developing a separate CMS system, integrating types of printed newspapers, electronic newspapers, electronic specialized pages, digital ecosystem... on a single interface, logging in with a single account, supporting multiple languages, multiple formats and flexible customization... This transformation has contributed to increasing advertising revenue on the newspaper's publications by 20-50%/year.

Meanwhile, Nhan Dan Newspaper has applied a new approach, combining traditional elements and digital technology to enhance the experience for readers. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu Victory, the newspaper organized an interactive painting exhibition Panorama, and recently an interactive exhibition to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and the reunification of the country. Mr. Le Quoc Minh, member of the Party Central Committee, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department, Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association, affirmed that Nhan Dan Newspaper is following the trend of combining traditional and digital platforms to create a large number of views. For example, in the program to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South, the newspaper published a special publication connecting the Ho Chi Minh campaign with videos and clips, using augmented reality technology. During the 12-day exhibition in Hanoi and other localities, the 50,000 printed copies of the newspaper were still not enough to provide... for readers.

Adaptive newsroom

Adaptation to digital transformation is also being implemented by press units. Ho Chi Minh City Radio and Television (HTV) has applied artificial intelligence (AI) to all production processes. After a pilot program 2 years ago on creating news bulletins entirely from AI, currently, using AI is a mandatory skill for HTV reporters.

“HTV’s policy is to meet the need for fast information and distribution on social media platforms. Reporters are required to have the skills to film, edit, and complete right on mobile devices. For example, a weather report that used to take 3 people half a day now only needs 1 person for 30 minutes...”, said Mr. Ngo Truong Thinh, Head of Multimedia Department, HTV.

Journalist Dao Dinh Khoa, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Bac Ninh Newspaper, also shared: “AI is reshaping the journalism industry through automating production, personalizing content and expanding data analysis capabilities. Grasping this trend, the Provincial Journalists Association has recently organized many specialized training programs on AI in journalism activities. Up to now, provincial newspaper reporters basically use AI as a virtual assistant in the news production process.”

According to the Press Department (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism), by the end of 2024, most radio and television stations will have deployed the production of short video content and multi-platform clips in a fast, short model; more than 80% of newsrooms have applied technology platforms such as CMS, AI, and data analysis to the content production and distribution process. Digital transformation is identified as a strategic pillar to restructure the media ecosystem. The press is transforming from the role of a news reporter to the role of a content creator.

Regarding this issue, according to Mr. Tran Minh Tuan, Director of the Department of Digital Economy and Society (Ministry of Science and Technology), “Resolution 57-NQ/TW on breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation has clearly stated: Large resources will be provided for activities of applying new technologies and digital transformation. This is an opportunity for press agencies to take advantage of and invest effectively. In recent times, newsrooms have adapted to digital transformation at different levels. Digital transformation is an opportunity for the press to affirm its leading role in the digital information era.

Mr. Le Hai Binh, Permanent Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said that Vietnam attaches special importance to the role of the press in the period of integration and development, focusing on creating conditions for the press to adapt to changes in technology, the media environment and the information needs of society. In recent years, the Government has implemented many major policies and policies to support human resource training and invest in technology infrastructure for press agencies.

In the coming time, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will focus on perfecting the legal framework in the field of journalism and digital media, especially regulations related to content created by artificial intelligence (AI), clearly defining the legal responsibilities of organizations and individuals in the use of AI. In addition, it will create conditions and have policies to support press agencies in applying digital technology to the process of content production and distribution; prioritize improving digital capacity for journalists, to form the ability to quickly adapt to digital transformation and modern media trends.
