The longest used cufflinks
On October 27, 1962, Bac Giang and Bac Ninh provinces merged into Ha Bac province. The newspaper named “Ha Bac” also started from then. During the period 1963-1993, Ha Bac Newspaper was published twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. From 1994-1996, the Newspaper was published three times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The most prominent of these was the 12-page “Ha Bac Saturday” newspaper, printed in 4 colors.
Comrades in the Editorial Board of Bac Giang Newspaper and leaders of departments approved the mock-up of Bac Giang Newspaper No. 1 (published on January 3, 1997). |
After 35 years of unification, on November 6, 1996, at the 10th session, the 9th National Assembly issued a Decision approving the re-establishment of Bac Ninh and Bac Giang provinces. On January 1, 1997, Bac Giang province officially operated under the new administrative unit. The first issue of Bac Giang Newspaper after the re-establishment of the province was published on January 3, 1997. Because Ha Bac Newspaper had to divide its staff and many working equipment in half, the Editorial Board of Bac Giang Newspaper proposed to reduce the number of issues from 3 issues to 2 issues/week.
The time of publishing the first issue of Bac Giang Newspaper after the province was re-established was unforgettable. Journalist Hoang Dinh Tien, former Editor-in-Chief of Ha Bac Newspaper and Bac Giang Newspaper, recalled that at that time, the agency had to carry out all the necessary work for Ha Bac Newspaper to publish its last issue on December 31, 1996, while at the same time preparing for Bac Giang Newspaper to publish its first issue on January 3, 1997 and the Dinh Suu Spring Newspaper. On January 8, 1997, the Provisional Executive Committee of the Bac Giang Provincial Party Committee issued Resolution No. 05-NQ/TU to establish Bac Giang Newspaper. Implementing the Resolution of the Provincial Party Committee, Bac Giang Newspaper quickly stabilized its organization, ensuring that all activities took place normally in the first month after separation.
As for me, in August 1993 I was recruited to Ha Bac Newspaper (now Bac Giang Newspaper). After a period of both apprenticeship and practice of newspaper layout and commentary in Hanoi , I was assigned by the Editorial Board of Ha Bac Newspaper and the Editorial Secretariat to redesign the mantel and insert the columns in Ha Bac Newspaper publications. In preparation for the first issue of Bac Giang Newspaper, I was honored to be assigned the responsibility of designing the mantel of Bac Giang Newspaper by comrade Hoang Dinh Tien.
After about half a month of concentration and deep thinking, I presented to the Editorial Board 3 options for the mandala design (designed by hand and then redrawn on the computer for printing). After careful consideration, the Editorial Board chose the “Bac Giang” mandala design with a bold, upright, strong font, expressing seriousness and stability. With its compatibility and strong recognition, this new mandala design has been used on Bac Giang Newspaper publications since 1997 until now, becoming the longest-used mandala since the establishment of Ha Bac Newspaper and Bac Giang Newspaper.
Deep impression
The editorial board's policy at that time was that Bac Giang newspaper No. 1 (12 pages, 4-color cover) must be an impressive issue in both content and form; marking a new stage of making newspapers more practical and attractive. Accordingly, on the front page, along with an editorial titled "Solidarity to build a rich and civilized Bac Giang province of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam", the newspaper solemnly published a map of Bac Giang province; a list of the provisional Executive Committee of the Bac Giang Provincial Party Committee; a list of the provisional People's Committee of Bac Giang province. The footer of the first page was an article by journalist Xuan Hong titled "Living with the eternal spirit of a Bac Giang battlefield!", the content urging the people of Bac Giang to move forward, grasping the opportunity for change. The inside page was news, articles, photos, cartoons, and stories highlighting the strengths and potential for economic, cultural, and social development of the land and people of Bac Giang...
From 1997 to present, the newspaper has been named Bac Giang; published 2 issues/week (from January 1997); 4 issues/week (from January 2001); 5 issues/week (from April 2002); 6 issues/week (from June 2013). The printed newspaper publications have a circulation of more than 15,000 copies/issue. On January 1, 2007, the Bac Giang Electronic Newspaper was published; on January 1, 2017, the English Electronic Newspaper was published; on February 1, 2023, the Chinese Electronic Newspaper was published. |
Under the direct guidance of journalist Do Cuong, Head of the Editorial Secretary Department, with the support of the artist Van Giao and receiving beautiful photos from journalists The Dung and Viet Hung, with a spirit of urgent and serious work, I completed the design of the mockup of Bac Giang newspaper issue 1 in the shortest time. Because it was a special issue, comrades in the Editorial Board including journalists Hoang Dinh Tien, Ngo Toan and leaders of the departments: Editorial Secretary, Reporter, Computer-Preparation, Photo Group were all present, contributing constructive ideas. After balancing the news, articles, adjusting the title and layout, journalist Hoang Dinh Tien directly signed the mockup, transferred the layout and printed the newspaper. When published, the first issue of Bac Giang newspaper was received with positive feedback, leaving a deep impression in the hearts of readers as well as colleagues of Bac Ninh Newspaper at that time.
Immediately after the first issue was published, Comrade Do Binh Duong, Secretary of the Bac Giang Provincial Party Committee, visited and encouraged the staff, reporters and workers of Bac Giang Newspaper. At the same time, he gave suggestions on the layout of the newspaper, so that Bac Giang Newspaper would become more and more attractive to readers. This was a strong motivation and source of encouragement for those working at Bac Giang Newspaper to complete their tasks well in the initial and later difficult times. As a result, from the beginning of 1997, the Newspaper was published twice a week on Tuesday and Friday. Both issues were printed in color, with the Friday issue printed in 4 colors.
The columns: Party Building, Today's Issues, Rural-Agricultural, Science and Life, All People Doing Good Deeds, Law and Life... were all welcomed by readers. With the attention of the Provincial Party Committee, Provincial People's Committee and the support of Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper, in 1997, Bac Giang Newspaper made a step forward in newspaper technology: Installing a printer, the computer system was equipped with new machines. On December 12, 1998, the Newspaper Printing Workshop started construction. The Computer Room was equipped with more modern machines, pagers, photo scanners and Internet access, ensuring the newspaper was published on time.
Since the publication of Bac Giang Newspaper No. 1, more than 28 years have passed, Bac Giang Newspaper has continuously innovated and developed. Now Bac Giang Newspaper is published daily and has an additional monthly magazine “Bac Giang at the end of the month”, Bac Giang Newspaper online (with Vietnamese, English and Chinese versions). The journey of more than 28 years of Bac Giang Newspaper is about to end to become a new type of journalism that is more diverse, more attractive, more effective, but the memory of presenting Bac Giang Newspaper No. 1 is still deeply in my mind and that of my colleagues.
