Upholding filial piety

Mr. Le Van Duc (born in 1982) is the youngest child in a family facing difficult circumstances. From childhood until he got married, he lived with his mother in Hoa Cuong ward, before the family moved to apartment building No. 4 Nguyen Tri Phuong.

All six of Duc's siblings are from disadvantaged backgrounds and struggle to make ends meet, so he takes on the responsibility of caring for and supporting his mother in her old age.

Since 2016, his mother has suffered a stroke and diabetes. Due to her advanced age and frail health, she has difficulty moving around and carrying out daily activities. In early 2026, her condition worsened, requiring hospitalization and treatment. She was diagnosed with kidney failure and now needs regular dialysis.

While his mother was ill, more misfortunes befell Duc. In 2020, he was diagnosed with a heart condition requiring urgent surgery. At that time, he worked as a warehouse employee for Dien May Xanh (a Vietnamese electronics retailer) earning about 8 million VND per month, his wife was unemployed, and his two children were young. With no other options, he decided to mortgage his apartment to pay for his mother's treatment and his own surgery.

After the surgery, the entire family of five rented a cramped room on Ha Huy Giap Street. His mother was bedridden, and he took care of everything from eating to personal hygiene.

In 2024, the Da Nang City People's Committee allocated his family an apartment in the Nai Hien Dong apartment complex (Son Tra ward). Having a stable place to live didn't ease the burden. His mother was increasingly frail and unable to care for herself. During the day, he cared for her meals and sleep; at night, he worked as a Grab driver to earn extra income. Beside him was his hardworking wife, who always shared his difficulties.

The difficulties didn't end there. His eldest daughter was diagnosed with osteomyelitis and had to undergo months of hospital treatment. In March 2026, his mother was also admitted to the emergency room for dialysis. During those days, he was constantly busy between the two hospitals, caring for his children while also being by his mother's side. More than two weeks ago, his mother passed away due to her worsening condition.

Ms. Vu Thi Huong, head of residential group 22N, Son Tra ward, said that despite suffering from heart disease, Mr. Le Van Duc still strives to overcome difficulties to work, take care of his family, and devotedly care for his elderly mother. Not only is he filial, but he is also friendly and always ready to help those around him when needed. Moved by Mr. Duc's filial piety, on May 26th, the Da Nang City Charity and Child Protection Association, in coordination with Da Nang Newspaper, Radio and Television, and Ha Giang Phuoc Tuong Mechanical Joint Stock Company, organized the "Exemplary Filial Piety" program, donating 50 million VND to support Mr. Duc's family.

"I am very grateful for the concern and assistance from the organizations and the community. It's not just material support, but also motivation for my family to overcome difficulties," Mr. Duc said emotionally.

Awakening the spirit of filial piety and righteousness.

The "Exemplary Filial Piety" program, implemented by the Da Nang City Charity and Child Protection Association since 2021, has contributed to spreading positive values of filial piety in the community.

The program aims to recognize and commend individuals who show filial piety towards their grandparents and parents, while also providing financial support to those in difficult circumstances so they can continue to care for their loved ones, develop their economy , and stabilize their lives.

Eligible recipients for support include poor households and households facing extreme difficulties with well-behaved and academically successful children; families with three or more generations living together; families that have achieved the title of "Culturally Exemplary Family" and demonstrate a thoughtful spirit of caring for and supporting their grandparents and parents.

Over the years, the program has supported 15 exemplary individuals demonstrating filial piety with a total funding of over 900 million VND. In addition, two cases under the "Filial Piety Family" category received support totaling 50 million VND. Those receiving support are children, grandchildren, daughters-in-law, or sons-in-law within the family, who are deeply filial and overcome difficulties to care for their loved ones.

Throughout the program, Ha Giang Phuoc Tuong Mechanical Joint Stock Company has been a partner.

According to the company representatives, participating in this support program not only signifies sharing with those in difficult circumstances but also contributes to preserving and spreading the tradition of filial piety and righteousness of the Vietnamese people.

According to the company, each form of support is not simply about material value, but also about motivating families to have additional sources of livelihood, gradually develop economically, overcome poverty, and continue to better care for their parents.

According to Le Thi Tam, Chairwoman of the Da Nang City Charity and Child Protection Association, after many years of implementation, the program has yielded positive results, with many supported individuals rising out of poverty and stabilizing their lives.

In particular, some families, after overcoming difficulties, actively participate in charitable activities, joining hands to help other less fortunate people. This is the greatest value that the program aims for, not only providing material support but also fostering a spirit of filial piety, righteousness, and compassion in the community.

“We hope to continue receiving the support of organizations, businesses, and philanthropists so that the program can be sustained in the long term. Through this, we can contribute to spreading exemplary examples of filial piety and promoting the beautiful tradition of filial piety and righteousness of our nation,” shared Ms. Le Thi Tam.
