Ngoc Linh ginseng prices have dropped by half.
Grade 1 Ngoc Linh ginseng sold at the ginseng market in Nam Tra My district, Quang Nam province, is now priced at 120 million VND per kilogram, a decrease of half compared to the same period last year.
The 6th Ngoc Linh Ginseng Festival in Nam Tra My district is currently underway. A farmer from Tra Linh commune brought a 700-gram ginseng plant with 5 branches, tubers, and roots over 7 cm tall, heavily laden with fruit, to the market for sale. They priced the plant at 200 million VND and three plants weighing 500 grams each at over 70 million VND. Last year, the 700-gram plant fetched 400 million VND, and three 500-gram plants sold for 150 million VND, but this year the price has been halved and no one is interested.
More than 10 stalls here are selling Ngoc Linh ginseng, which the authorities guarantee is genuine ginseng from local people and businesses. Grade 1 ginseng (10 roots per kilogram) is priced at 100-120 million VND, a 50% decrease compared to last year. Similarly, grade 2 ginseng (20 roots per kilogram) costs 80-90 million VND, compared to 95-135 million VND last year.
Grade 3 ginseng (30 roots per kilogram) costs approximately 65-75 million VND, grade 4 ginseng (40 roots per kilogram) costs 50-60 million VND, and grade 5 ginseng (50 roots per kilogram) costs 40-50 million VND. Compared to last year, ginseng prices have decreased by 10 to 30 million VND per kilogram. The larger the ginseng root, the more significant the price drop.
According to the owner of a ginseng cultivation and trading business at the market, Ngoc Linh ginseng prices began to rise in 2015. For example, in 2020, grade 1 ginseng sold for 240 million VND per kilogram, while grade 5 ginseng fetched 60-75 million VND. By mid-2023, Ngoc Linh ginseng prices began to plummet.
Nam Tra My district has planned a Ngoc Linh ginseng cultivation area of over 15,000 hectares, currently preserving about 100 hectares, equivalent to approximately 2 million plants. Ginseng is cultivated by more than 1,500 households on about 1,650 hectares and by 18 businesses on over 340 hectares. Annual production is approximately 10 tons, valued at 600 billion VND.
