Small traders set up umbrellas to 'set up a market' on Thang Long Avenue

Along the Thang Long Boulevard service road in Tu Liem and Xuan Phuong wards (Hanoi), many small traders brazenly stretch out umbrellas and set up tents to sell goods right on the road, causing traffic insecurity.

According to the reporter's records, during the morning and evening rush hours every day, the Thang Long Boulevard service road becomes chaotic when vendors display a variety of goods, fruits, even clothes, household appliances, and drink stalls... Each person encroaches on a part of the sidewalk or road by stretching out umbrellas, setting up tables and chairs, parking trucks, or spreading tarps right next to the busy road.

Not only sellers, but also buyers stop and park their vehicles arbitrarily on the road, often brake suddenly, and cut across to buy and sell, causing traffic obstruction and unsafety for other vehicles. It is worth mentioning that Thang Long Avenue is a vital route connecting the city center with the western part of the capital, with high traffic density and rampant trading, increasing the risk of accidents.

Many small traders said that due to the lack of stable premises or the high cost of renting a kiosk, they are forced to sell goods on the roadside to make a living. However, the long-term occupation of sidewalks and roads is making the urban landscape become shabby and messy, significantly affecting the urban beauty and traffic safety.

Faced with this situation, people petitioned the local government and functional forces of Hanoi to strengthen inspection and strict handling, and at the same time have solutions to arrange suitable trading locations for small traders to both ensure livelihoods and maintain urban order.

The situation of shops encroaching on the road and sidewalk on Thang Long Boulevard occurs every day but has not been thoroughly resolved.

Previously, around the end of 2024, the Tin Tuc and Dan Toc newspaper published an article reflecting on the above situation. The authorities of Nam Tu Liem district (old) intervened to handle violations of urban order on the Thang Long Boulevard service road. However, the situation of "markets" encroaching on the road and sidewalks in this area quickly recurred afterwards.

Urban experts say that, in addition to coercive measures, the government needs to plan for legal traditional markets and mobile sales points to avoid the situation of "clearing one place and growing another" lasting for a long time, causing public outrage.
