C CHOOSE A SUBJECT COMBINATION SUITABLE FOR CAREER ORIENTATION
The upcoming 2025-2026 school year will be the fourth year of the 2018 General Education Program with the goal of career orientation being implemented at the high school level. For parents of 9th grade students preparing to enter 10th grade, Mr. Nguyen Hung Khuong, Principal of Ernst Thälmann High School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City), said that at the junior high school level, all students study the same subjects. However, at the high school level, there is differentiation and career orientation, so students only study the same compulsory subjects including math, literature, foreign languages, history, physical education, national security education, and career orientation activities. In addition, depending on their abilities and career orientation, students will choose 4 out of 9 subjects: geography, economic and legal education, physics, chemistry, biology, technology, information technology, music, and fine arts. Thus, there will be 126 different ways to choose subject combinations.

Depending on the actual situation, the school will build a number of combinations based on the principle of ensuring scientificity , suitability for capacity and career orientation. For official information about the subject combinations, parents and students can refer to the information portal of each high school.
In particular, for students in the integrated English program, they will study 3 default elective subjects: physics, chemistry, and biology, so they only need to choose 1 more subject from the remaining subjects.
For specialized school students, if the specialized subject is among the compulsory subjects, they will choose 4 elective subjects from the remaining subjects. If the specialized subject is among the elective subjects, students will choose 3 more subjects from the elective subjects.
According to the principal of Ernst Thälmann High School, choosing 4 elective subjects is an important turning point in the 3 years of high school and the future because this will be linked to the career orientation of students. Therefore, students need to think carefully and find out enough information to make the best choice for themselves.
5 NOTES WHEN CHOOSING SUBJECT COMBINATIONS FOR GRADE 10
Mr. Nguyen Hung Khuong gave 5 notes when choosing 4 elective subjects: First, learn carefully about the 4 elective subjects. This is an important decision, because if you choose wrongly, students have to wait until the end of the school year to be able to change after passing the test and survey.
Second, the subjects chosen are related to future careers. The subjects chosen from grade 10 will determine the university entrance exam combination, affecting the student's future career.
Third, do not choose according to the majority, choose according to your own ability. Each student has their own strengths and interests, do not choose a subject just because your friends choose it. If a student does not like or has no talent for the chosen subject, the learning process will encounter many difficulties.
Fourth, consult with teachers and parents. Talk to subject teachers and homeroom teachers to better understand the content of each subject. Discuss with parents to get appropriate support and guidance.
Fifth, consider the regulations of the school you want to attend. Some high schools may limit the combination of courses you can choose, so students should carefully review the list of courses provided by the school.
Regarding the organization of elective subjects from grade 10 in the non-public school system, Mr. Nguyen Van An, career guidance consultant at Tran Cao Van Secondary and High School (HCMC), said that this school fully implements the subject groups oriented to natural sciences, social sciences and art oriented subjects. The study of elective subjects is carried out in accordance with the regulations on the number of periods, program content, and study topics of the Ministry of Education and Training, assigning teachers with the right expertise and teaching experience. The school focuses on innovating teaching methods, applying information technology in teaching to increase students' interest and promote the proactiveness of learners.
Mr. Nguyen Van An also informed that during the learning process, if students find the subject combination is not suitable, they can switch to another subject combination at the end of grade 10. However, students must study new subjects during the summer to complete the knowledge of this subject in grade 10. After that, the school will test and evaluate, if they meet the requirements according to regulations, students will be eligible to switch to the new subject combination.
Grade 9 students attend a 10th grade admissions counseling session.

Mr. Cao Quang Tu, Director of Admissions of Asian School, said that the school's subject combinations are diverse with 8 subject combinations of natural sciences, social sciences and talents for students to choose from. The team in charge of professional matters checks, reviews and supports subject teachers to ensure that the teaching content is both consistent with the 2018 GeneralEducation Program and meets the requirements of modern education in the digital age. At the same time, it complies with quality standards as a member of the CIS International Schools Accreditation Council.
Teachers apply active teaching methods to meet learning needs, helping students access knowledge in the optimal way, grasp lessons right in class, apply information technology in learning and project work, and avoid learning in the traditional, boring and ineffective way.
Students have difficulty with their chosen subjects, does the school provide additional knowledge?
Sending a question to the consulting program, reader Tran Huu Nghi wondered: "If I study at Asia International School with elective subjects and English advantage, what will my degree be like after finishing high school? Can my child register for university entrance exams in and outside the country?"
Mr. Cao Quang Tu said that students study in parallel the program of the Ministry of Education and Training and the international program built according to the American Education Reaches Out (AERO) and Common Core State Standards of the US. For high school students, they have the option to study the Advanced Placement (AP) program of the College Board - USA to access university knowledge early, have the opportunity to earn university credits right from high school and build an outstanding international study abroad and scholarship profile.
"The vast majority of the school's students have achieved an IELTS certificate of 6.0 or higher. After graduating from high school, there are two directions: either entering a domestic university or studying abroad. Many students receive scholarships from prestigious universities around the world," Mr. Tu added.
Reader Nguyen Ngoc Trang (Long An) sent the program a question: "What kind of learning and living conditions will students from other provinces receive when studying at private schools? For students who still face limitations when studying elective subjects according to career orientation, how does Tran Cao Van School support and tutor them?"
Mr. Nguyen Van An, a consultant at Tran Cao Van Secondary and High School (HCMC), explained: "For students from other provinces, boarding is a suitable choice. Students will study and live entirely at school, only returning home on weekends. In the evening, they will be directly accompanied by teachers to support them in studying, doing homework, and managing their personal activities. Outside of school hours, boarding students also have the opportunity to participate in physical activities such as swimming, soccer, basketball, bodybuilding, etc. to develop comprehensively both physically and mentally."
For students who still have many limitations when studying elective subjects, Mr. An said that the school has a completely free supplementary knowledge program. "The goal of the supplementary program is not only to help students consolidate their knowledge but also to inspire their passion for learning and confidence, so that each student feels the companionship and dedicated care from the school," Mr. An emphasized.
