Mr. Phieu said that in 1990, after his parents gave him 3 hectares of rice fields (3,000 m2 ) , he discussed with his wife about selling all his wedding gold to buy 1 more hectare. At first, he grew commercial rice according to old production practices, so the economic efficiency was not high, family life was very difficult, he had to work as a bricklayer, doing many jobs. After that, he grew straw mushrooms, earned a large amount of money, then bought more land, expanded the area of commercial rice cultivation, and then switched to growing rice seeds.
Pioneer in rice seed production
In 1998, he joined the Farmers' Association of Thot Not District (now Thot Not District) and was helped by the association to borrow capital to develop production, attend training sessions on technology transfer, seminars on rice plants... "Traveling a day, learning a basket of knowledge", when he mastered the techniques and visited many effective production models, Mr. Phieu piloted a rice seed production model to increase income. In 2006, he produced rice seeds in the form of "planting one rice stalk" on an area of 7,000 m2 . Continuing the success, in 2007, he applied it to 3 hectares of land and officially implemented the rice seed production model.

In agricultural production, association is very necessary. Therefore, in early 2010, with the support of the Thot Not Ward Farmers' Association, Mr. Phieu stood up to campaign for the establishment of the Ba Khem Rice Seed Production Club. "At that time, the Mekong Delta region had less than 10 rice seed farms. When I pioneered and the profits were high, I was able to convince many households to join in order to get rich from rice.
"To produce quality rice seeds, I send workers to the farmers' fields to check each crop three times. The first time is about 40 days, if the inspection finds that the rice is different from the customer or the variety, all will be pulled out. After 60 - 65 days, when the rice is in bloom, the workers will come in to select again, if it is different from the variety, they will cut it off. After 90 days of final inspection, if any field does not meet the standards, the farmers will be required to sell commercial rice, not seed rice. Each crop, with 100 hectares, more than 20 hectares will be removed. Thanks to that, the production of quality rice seeds has created prestige with customers," Mr. Phieu shared.

Depending on the season and the farmers' sowing needs, Mr. Phieu produces different types of rice seeds. Associated households are purchased at a price 500 - 700 VND/kg higher than the market price. Currently, his rice seed production facility covers an area of over 100 hectares, including 15 hectares of family land and more than 85 hectares associated with more than 55 farming households, producing key rice varieties such as OM5451, OM18, Jasmine 85, IR50404, Dai Thom...
Passionate about rice seed production, in 2015, Mr. Phieu invested more than 10 billion VND to build a rice seed processing, packaging and service facility including 4 drying ovens, 2 seed separator machines... supplying 50 wholesale customers in provinces, cities and Cambodia... Every year, he sells thousands of tons of rice seeds, earning 4 - 5 billion VND. "Usually, in the summer-autumn and winter-spring crops, he only sells 400 - 500 tons, in the autumn-winter crop alone, he sells 1,300 - 1,400 tons of rice seeds," said Mr. Phieu.
Mr. Phung Van The, a member of the club, shared: "Mr. Ba Khem not only enthusiastically guides the techniques but also invests in seeds, supports loans, and at the end of the season, guarantees the sale of products. My family has 1 hectare of land for growing rice seeds. Thanks to joining the club, production has become more and more stable. Every year, after deducting expenses, I earn hundreds of millions of dong, much higher than selling commercial rice."
Profit allocation for SOCIAL SECURITY
Having experienced poverty, Mr. Phieu always sympathizes with the hardships of people in similar situations. Since then, he has not hesitated to donate 10% of his business profits to support social security activities.

Recently, witnessing the people of the Northern provinces being severely affected by storm No. 3, Mr. Phieu donated more than 1 billion VND in support. At the same time, he called on friends and relatives to contribute 20 tons of rice, 1,000 boxes of instant noodles, and sew 1,000 blankets to transport to give to people in Lao Cai province.
As a member of the Farmers' Association of Trung Kien Ward (Thot Not District), he also plays a key role in the locality, contributing to the construction of new rural areas and civilized urban areas through giving gifts to poor and near-poor households, contributing to the farmer support fund, the education promotion fund, building rural roads, building "Farmer's Shelter" houses...
Mr. Nguyen Van Dan, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Thot Not District, said that Mr. Phieu has been an outstanding farmer for many years in Can Tho City. Not only does he produce rice seeds to enrich his family, create jobs for local workers, and help them have a stable income, but every year, he enthusiastically contributes to social security activities. In 2024, Mr. Phieu was honored to be voted an outstanding Vietnamese farmer.
