Court orders Trump to immediately compensate defamed former journalist

VnExpressVnExpress08/03/2024

A federal judge has rejected Mr. Trump's request to delay $83.3 million in compensation to former journalist Carroll, ordering him to pay on time.

Federal Judge Lewis Kaplan in Manhattan, New York, on March 7 ordered former President Donald Trump to pay $83.3 million in damages to former journalist E. Jean Carroll by early next week.

A New York jury on January 26 found that former President Trump must pay former journalist E. Jean Carroll $65 million for making malicious public comments about her. The jury also said that Trump must pay Ms. Carroll $7.3 million in damages and spend $11 million on the former journalist's rehabilitation program. The total amount that Mr. Trump must pay is $83.3 million, far exceeding Ms. Carroll's initial request of $10 million.

Judge Kaplan agreed with the jury’s findings on February 8 and gave the former president 30 days to pay the fine. Trump recently filed a motion to have the verdict suspended or reduced to $24.475 million.

Carroll's lawyers objected to the request to delay the verdict or reduce the award, expressing concern that the former president would not actually pay.

Mr Trump denied the allegation, claiming Ms Carroll was “not my type” and “a total liar”. Ms Carroll then sued Mr Trump for defamation in a New York court in November 2019 and filed a second suit in November 2022.

Mr. Trump appealed and reaffirmed Ms. Carroll's story as "fake" and "made up by a crazy person." Ms. Carroll's side then amended the lawsuit, asking for $10 million in damages.

In addition to Ms. Carroll's case, Mr. Trump was ordered last month by a New York judge to pay a $355 million fine for allegedly illegally inflating his assets to obtain favorable bank loans or insurance policies.

The two civil cases have cost the former president about $438 million, and that’s just a fraction of the fines he could face in other lawsuits. The two large fines in New York account for nearly a sixth of Trump’s estimated net worth of about $2.6 billion, according to Forbes .

Asked by Fox News on March 5 whether he could pay the debts or fines in the two cases, the former president said: "I have a lot of money. I can do what I want and not worry about money."
