'The whole team must overcome weaknesses'

The Vietnam Olympic team is rushing to make final preparations at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center, before leaving for the 19th ASIAD in China on September 16.

Coach Hoang Anh Tuan and his team had their full squad in the training session yesterday afternoon (September 13) and are in the stage of honing their playing style. Sharing before today's training session (September 14), young midfielder Nguyen Duc Phu affirmed that the Vietnam Olympic team is training to overcome weaknesses.

"In the 2023 U.23 Asian qualifiers, we have the opportunity to face opponents outside the region such as U.23 Yemen. The opponents at ASIAD 19 are similar, they play very strong football, are physically strong, and have better height. We have to try to overcome our weaknesses," Duc Phu shared.

In Group D of the 19th Asian Games, the Vietnamese Olympic Team is in the same group with the Saudi Arabian Olympic Team, the Iranian Olympic Team and the Mongolian Olympic Team. The Saudi Arabian and Iranian teams are the championship candidates with formidable forces. The Saudi Arabian youth football team has just won the Asian Championship at the U.23 level, while Iran brings a strong squad to the 19th Asian Games, adding 2 very high-quality players from the national team.

Duc Phu affirmed: "Coach Hoang Anh Tuan instructed and reminded us of his playing philosophy when the team fully assembled yesterday. The whole team also recovered physically and mentally to prepare for the tournament. Coach Hoang Anh Tuan is very comfortable and at the same time asked the whole team to try to complete the task at ASIAD 19".

At ASIAD 19, the Vietnam Olympic team has no specific targets. This tournament is expected by the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) as an opportunity for the coaching staff to discover new talent, as well as help young players hone their skills and gain experience to build the next generation for the Vietnam team.

"In the Vietnam Olympic team, we have many players who won the U.23 Southeast Asian Championship and have just completed the U.23 Asian qualifying round. The players are confident entering the 19th ASIAD. We set the best goal for each match. My personal goal as well as the whole team's is to play the best in each match," Duc Phu emphasized.

Young midfielder Duc Phu is the "favorite student" of Coach Troussier and Hoang Anh Tuan, when he was given continuous opportunities in major tournaments such as the 2023 U.20 Asian Cup finals, the 32nd SEA Games or the 2024 U.23 Asian Cup qualifiers since the beginning of the year. In the PVF-CAND Club shirt, Duc Phu is also an important factor.

"Playing continuously is an advantage that helps me mature. Playing a lot in the past time, my physical strength has been affected a bit but it is not a problem. Coach Hoang Anh Tuan is helping us recover best for ASIAD 19", Duc Phu concluded.
