Shrimp farmers in Long An province are excited because shrimp prices have reached their highest level in many years, bringing high profits. This is a positive signal for the local seafood industry, especially in the context of shrimp prices being low for nearly 2 years.
According to some shrimp traders in Nhut Ninh commune, Tan Tru district (Long An province), for about a month now, the purchase price of black tiger shrimp and white-leg shrimp of all kinds has increased by 10,000-25,000 VND/kg compared to the same period.
White leg shrimp size 30-40 pcs/kg ranges from 190,000-200,000 VND/kg; shrimp size 60-80 pcs/kg costs from 115,000-125,000 VND/kg; shrimp size 100-110 pcs/kg costs from 95,000-105,000 VND/kg.
Giant tiger prawns of 30-40 pieces/kg cost from 170,000-190,000 VND/kg; giant tiger prawns of 50 pieces/kg or more cost from 120,000-150,000 VND/kg.
Ms. Vo Thi Giang (Nhat Ninh commune, Tan Tru district) said: “I have 2 ponds raising white-leg shrimp with an area of 0.6 hectares of water surface. For nearly 2 years, the production situation has been very difficult due to high feed prices while shrimp prices have fallen sharply.
By the end of the 2024 production season, the market situation is very favorable, such as high shrimp prices, less diseased shrimp, etc. Currently, my shrimp are more than 50 days old, and are expected to be sold in 15-20 days. Hopefully, shrimp prices will continue to increase."
Mr. Nguyen Van Chan (Tan Chanh commune, Can Duoc district, Long An province) excitedly said: "In previous shrimp crops this year, although the shrimp had few diseases, due to low selling prices and high production costs, shrimp farmers did not have high profits. This shrimp crop, shrimp prices are high, many farmers have made big profits, it is estimated that farmers earn about 400 million VND per hectare of shrimp farming."
Shrimp prices increase, shrimp farmers in Long An province have high profits.
Some shrimp farmers said the reason for the high shrimp prices is that at this time, the area of shrimp ponds ready for harvest is still small while the consumption market is strong, leading to "demand exceeding supply".
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the total shrimp farming area in the province in 2024 is 6,163 hectares. Of which, black tiger shrimp is 543 hectares; white-leg shrimp is 5,620 hectares, equal to 101% of the plan, equal to 100.2% over the same period.
Deputy Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fisheries of Long An province - Nguyen Thanh Toan warned: At the end of the year, the high temperature difference between day and night, low salinity,... are favorable conditions for shrimp diseases to develop strongly. Therefore, to limit risks, farmers need to be careful and have thorough preparation before releasing new crops.
In particular, it is necessary to choose quality shrimp breeds from reputable facilities; strictly manage daily food intake and regularly check shrimp health to have timely and effective technical measures.
