At around 5:10 p.m. on September 21 (New York time, or 4:10 a.m. on September 22 Vietnam time), the plane landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. General Secretary and President To Lam and his wife left the plane, beginning their first trip to the US in their new position.

Welcoming the General Secretary , President and his wife at the airport were Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Nguyen Quoc Dung, Head of the Vietnamese Delegation to the United Nations - Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang and a number of embassy officials and Vietnamese delegation to the United Nations.

As Tuoi Tre Online reported earlier, the 79th United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week took place in New York, USA.

The focus will be on the Future Summit (September 22-23) and the General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly (September 24-28), which call for enhanced international cooperation and consolidation of multilateralism, with the United Nations at the centre to promote the implementation of common goals, especially the Sustainable Development Goals.

Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, head of the Vietnamese delegation to the United Nations, said that a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation led by General Secretary and President To Lam will attend both events.

In which, the head of the Party and State of Vietnam will send out a major message: "Strengthening multilateralism, acting together to create a peaceful, stable, prosperous and sustainable future for all people".

As for the US, Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Nguyen Quoc Dung said that General Secretary and President To Lam's visit took place exactly one year after Vietnam and the US upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership for peace, cooperation and sustainable development. In addition, next year, 2025, Vietnam and the US will celebrate the 30th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations.

“In particular, in the context of the US preparing for the election and the upcoming leadership transition, the results of this working trip will help maintain and consolidate the momentum of progress in Vietnam-US relations in the coming years, contributing to promoting peace, cooperation and progress in the region and the world,” Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung affirmed.

With that meaning, according to Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung, General Secretary and President To Lam will have a very rich and diverse program of activities in the US with a series of meetings and contacts with leaders, friends in the government, the business community, scholars, overseas Vietnamese, etc.

In particular, General Secretary and President To Lam will chair the event to celebrate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations and one year of the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The head of the Vietnamese Party and State will also deliver an important policy speech at Columbia University – one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the United States. On this occasion, many members of the delegation will also have bilateral activities with American partners.
