Việt NamViệt Nam30/05/2025

On May 29, the Department of Agriculture and Environment (DARD) held a workshop to summarize the project “Enhancing the resilience of agricultural ecosystems and local communities to climate change in coastal areas of Bac Lieu province”. Attending the workshop were representatives of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), institutes, schools, cooperatives and farmers participating in the project.

With funding from WWF, the project was officially implemented in April 2023 in the province. Accordingly, there are 10 cooperatives, cooperatives (HTX) and farmer groups in 4 localities, including: Gia Rai town, Phuoc Long district, Hong Dan district and Dong Hai district with a total of 2,936 beneficiaries. The project supports 100% of shrimp seeds, rice seeds, tools and agricultural materials such as microorganisms, minerals, organic fertilizers. Along with that, 43 training courses on science and technology transfer have been conducted, with 1,289 participants. Of which, there are 25 training courses on shrimp farming techniques, management and care in the shrimp-rice model, 18 training courses on rice cultivation techniques in the shrimp-rice model. Through training courses, farmers have been equipped with awareness and understanding of the impacts of climate change, drought, salinity intrusion and techniques for rice-shrimp farming, and sustainable rice production on shrimp farming land. The project also helps improve the capacity of agricultural cooperatives to apply sustainable production standards and form a chain of linkages.

WWF representatives visited the shrimp farming model in the project in Dong Hai district.

Through the implementation of the model, rice and shrimp productivity are both higher than the control area. In particular, shrimp productivity increases every year, specifically: in 2023, the project will implement the model on 27.5 hectares with 13 households, the average shrimp productivity is 127.6 kg/ha, 2.47 times higher than the control area; in 2024, the project will implement 60 hectares with 30 households, the average shrimp productivity is 186.1 kg/ha, 1.99 times higher than the control area; in 2025, the model will have 20 hectares with 18 households, the average shrimp productivity is 236.5 kg/ha.

According to the assessment of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the project has achieved certain results, which are improving livelihoods, managing and protecting the environment. Activities supporting materials, equipment, tools, and production planning have improved people's intellectual level, created jobs, created income, and contributed to improving the lives of farming households. This is an important premise for the locality to continue to direct the maintenance and expansion in the following years when the project ends, contributing to the successful implementation of the Strategy for Agricultural - Farmers - Rural Development for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2045 of Bac Lieu province.

On this occasion, the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee awarded certificates of merit to collectives and individuals who have made many contributions to the implementation of the Project "Enhancing the resilience to climate change of agricultural ecosystems and local communities in coastal areas of Bac Lieu province".
