On May 7, Slovak President Zuzana Caputova announced that she will appoint a new government after May 14. This government will be headed by Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS), Mr. Ludovit Odor.
The information was released in the context that Slovakia will hold early elections in less than 5 months.
Apart from future Prime Minister Odor , President Caputova did not announce further details of the new cabinet line-up. Mr. Odor, 46, has been Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine since 2018.
Previously, he was a member of the Independent Budget Council, a member of the NBS Banking Council and chief economist of the Ministry of Finance of Slovakia.
According to Ms. Caputova, the next six months "are still long enough for a Government of experts to stabilize the situation and lead Slovakia to early elections."
If formed, Mr. Odor's government will be the third since Slovakia held its last parliamentary election in late February 2020.
Earlier that morning, interim Prime Minister Eduard Heger expressed disagreement with President Caputova on how to handle the situation after two ministers in his interim cabinet resigned. Mr. Heger also asked President Caputova to dismiss him.
Prime Minister Heger's government lost its majority in the House of Representatives in September 2022 and then failed to survive a no-confidence vote in December last year. In January, the Slovak Parliament decided to hold early elections on September 30.
Slovakia 's latest political crisis erupted when the head of the opposition Social Democratic Party Smér (Smér-SD), former Prime Minister Robert Fico, criticized the fact that Agriculture Minister Samuel Vlcan's company Reko Recycling was the only one of eight candidates to win a 1.4 million euro state subsidy in the waste management sector.
Agriculture Minister Vlcan later resigned while police investigated the matter related to the subsidy. On May 5, Foreign Minister Rastislav Kacer announced his resignation.
Previously, the Finance Minister and Health Minister in Prime Minister Heger's caretaker government also resigned.
Polls show that former Prime Minister Fico’s Smér-SD party is leading in voter support. Unlike Prime Minister Heger’s government, Smér-SD opposes supplying weapons to Ukraine./.
