On July 9, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health held a conference to review the first 6 months of the year and deploy key tasks for the last 6 months of 2025 of the city's health sector.
Speaking at the conference, Dr. Nguyen Hoai Nam - Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health - said that after the merger, the city's population increased from more than 9.9 million people to 13.7 million people, the number of hospitals increased from 134 to 164, this is a very large number.
However, the city is facing the challenge that the ratio of hospital beds per 10,000 people after the merger will decrease from 42 to 35 beds per 10,000 people, requiring large investments.
The city's health sector needs to ensure the provision of quality health services to nearly 14 million people.
Therefore, the health sector will increase the transfer of technology and human resources to lower levels (especially immediately providing comprehensive support to the Con Dao Special Zone Military-Civilian Medical Center).
At the same time, coordinate with local authorities to improve people's health care, especially in areas far from the center.
According to Dr. Nam, Ho Chi Minh City has 168 medical stations and 296 stations. According to the Ministry of Health 's instructions, there will be 125 standard medical stations over 500m2 . These stations will be like a "mini hospital" with full departments.
Associate Professor Nguyen Anh Dung - Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health - said that after the merger, the health sector is building a special urban model - a center of health, science , technology and innovation for the whole country.
"The city will improve the capacity of health stations after the merger, including output standards and expanding coverage of primary health services. It is necessary to turn health stations into places closest to the people, places that people trust the most, carrying out the mission of primary medical examination and treatment, classifying and periodically monitoring people's health, and making sure that people go through this level first and then go through other specialized levels.
"Building 168 medical stations is the gateway to health care for the city's people," said Mr. Dung.
In the next phase, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health will advise the City People's Committee to rename 24 hospitals in accordance with the new administrative unit name after the arrangement. Conduct a general review and plan to support the improvement of professional capacity for hospitals in the area.
Aiming to become a specialized medical center in Asia
Associate Professor, Dr. Tang Chi Thuong - Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health - said that in the first 6 months of the year, the health sector has achieved many remarkable results, especially in disease prevention and implementation of the task of merging three medical facilities of three provinces.
The work of investigating, arranging and stabilizing the health system in the new context has been carried out urgently and continuously, demonstrating the high sense of responsibility of the medical team.
"We continue to review and advise the city to create favorable conditions for the health sector to develop. At the same time, we hope to continue to receive support from the city's leaders in the coming time to successfully fulfill the mission of taking care of people's health," said Mr. Thuong.
At the conference, Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Loc - Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee - highly appreciated the results that the city's health sector has achieved in the first 6 months of 2025.
At the same time, he emphasized that the city's health sector always holds a special position, is a special field that plays an extremely important role in caring for and protecting people's health, and at the same time contributes significantly to the city's socio-economic development.
The Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee hopes that the health sector will continue to unite, promote intelligence, innovation and creativity, to build the health sector into a specialized medical center of the region, worthy of Asia, serving the people better and better.
