Originating from Wuyi Mountain, Fujian Province, Southern China, Da Hong Pao tea is known as the king of teas, ranked in the top 10 famous teas of the country of a billion people.
Da Hong Pao is a type of oolong tea grown on rocky mountains (called rock tea), of premium quality, and in ancient times was only used as a royal tea.
There are only 6 mother Da Hong Pao trees that have survived since the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644), and they are still growing well today. Notably, these Da Hong Pao tea trees only yield less than 500 grams of finished product each year.
Therefore, Da Hong Pao tea is extremely expensive. In 2002, in a special auction in Guangzhou, 20 grams of Da Hong Pao tea was sold for 180,000 yuan (nearly 600 million dong).
In 2005, 20 grams of Da Hong Pao tea cost up to 208,000 yuan, equivalent to 10.4 million yuan/kg (about 37.4 billion VND). This amount of money could buy a villa in a normal city in China.
Because of their rarity, the Fujian provincial government has purchased insurance for these 6 Da Hong Pao tea trees for more than 300 billion VND.
In addition to its rarity, Da Hong Pao tea also has "both flavor and color". The dry tea has a reddish-brown color, and when brewed, the water has a bright orange-yellow color.
The aroma of Da Hong Pao tea is likened to the scent of orchids, with a long lasting and high scent retention.
While many other famous teas lose their flavor after only 7 water changes, Da Hong Pao tea still retains its original flavor after 9 brewing times.
