Northern Vietnam is about to experience a verstärkt cold front.

The strengthening cold air mass will cause temperatures in the North to drop significantly at night; however, during the day, there will be strong sunshine and high temperatures, resulting in a large temperature difference between day and night.

According to the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting, cold air masses will continue to intensify and move down into Vietnam in the coming days.

Due to the influence of continuously strengthening cold air combined with an upper-level divergence field, from November 13-15, the Northern region, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An will experience clear skies and sunny weather during the day.

During the night and early morning, the lowest temperatures drop, the weather turns cold, and in some mountainous areas, it is intensely cold. In the Northern region, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An, temperatures are around 16-18 degrees Celsius, with some mountainous areas in the North experiencing temperatures below 13 degrees Celsius.

Looking further ahead, from around the beginning of next week (November 16-17), the North is likely to experience a strong cold front, which could cause widespread cold weather, with severe cold in mountainous areas. Also due to the influence of this cold front, around November 15-16, heavy rain is likely to occur over a wide area from Ha Tinh to Lam Dong.

From November 13th, the northern region will experience cold weather at night and early morning, with strong sunshine during the day.

Over the past month, the North has experienced four cold fronts. Notably, the cold front on the night of October 19th caused strong winds of level 7, gusting to level 9 at Bach Long Vy station, and strong winds of level 6, gusting to level 8 at Con Co and Ly Son stations. The lowest daily temperatures in the Northern region generally ranged from 18-20 degrees Celsius, 15-17 degrees Celsius in mountainous areas, and below 13 degrees Celsius in some high mountainous areas such as Mau Son (Lang Son) at 8.9 degrees Celsius; Tam Dao (Phu Tho) at 12.1 degrees Celsius; and Sin Ho (Lai Chau) at 12.2 degrees Celsius.

The cold spell on October 26th also caused temperatures in the North to drop to 19-22 degrees Celsius, 17-19 degrees Celsius in mountainous areas, and below 15 degrees Celsius in high mountainous regions. Some places recorded quite low temperatures such as Mau Son at 12.7 degrees Celsius; Pha Din (Dien Bien) at 12.8 degrees Celsius; and Dong Van (Tuyen Quang) at 13.5 degrees Celsius.

The cold snap on November 3rd also caused temperatures in the North to drop sharply, with Pha Din (Dien Bien) reaching 12 degrees; Sapa (Lao Cai) 10.9 degrees; Dong Van (Tuyen Quang) 12.5 degrees; and Mau Son (Lang Son) 10.1 degrees.

The National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting predicts that cold fronts will continue to increase in frequency and intensity during November and early December. The North may experience widespread severe cold weather around the latter half of December.

Cold fronts, combined with upper-level easterly wind disturbances and the windward topography of the Truong Son mountain range, can also cause widespread thunderstorms in the central region, leading to the risk of flash floods, landslides, and inundation.
