North Korea claims successful test of new ICBM

According to KCNA , the new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) - the Hwasong-18 missile, "bolsters the nuclear counterattack posture and brings about a change in the practicality of the military offensive strategy".

“The purpose of the test-launch of the Hwasong-18 rocket was to confirm the performance of the high-thrust solid-fuel engine for the multi-stage rocket and the reliability of the stage launch technology and various functional control systems,” KCNA said.

"The test confirmed that all parameters of the new strategic weapon system fully met the design requirements for accuracy," KCNA added.

Kim Jong-un also said Pyongyang would continue its "offensive" actions to strike fear into its enemies, and set out "important strategic tasks" to bolster its nuclear forces.

North Korea fired a missile into the sea off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula on April 12, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said. Meanwhile, the Japanese coast guard also confirmed the launch, issuing an emergency warning to the public following Pyongyang's launch.

North Korea has criticized the recent series of joint military exercises between the US and South Korea, saying the two countries are taking "escalatory steps aimed at launching a war of aggression." According to Pyongyang, these activities are preparations for "all-out war" and force North Korea to consider "strong practical actions", including military measures.

The US and South Korea have been conducting annual exercises since March, including air and sea drills involving a US aircraft carrier and B-1B and B-52 bombers, as well as the first large-scale amphibious landing exercise in five years.

In recent weeks, North Korea has also carried out a number of military activities, including announcing a new miniaturized nuclear warhead, testing an unmanned submarine capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, and launching an intercontinental ballistic missile with a range that could cover the US territory.
