Mangosteen is a popular fruit in Vietnam, especially in the summer. The areas that consume large quantities of mangosteen are big cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho City, Da Nang, Hue, Hanoi , etc.

After researching and realizing that his soil is suitable for mangosteen, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Anh in Thanh Hieu area, Binh Thanh ward, Long My town ( Hau Giang province) invested in planting 4000m2 of mangosteen and has a fairly stable annual income for his family.

Mangosteen is a fruit tree with high commercial value. Mangosteen prices on the market range from 40,000-70,000 VND/kg, and have export potential.

Mangosteen trees can live and bear fruit for over 50 years, providing long-term stable income for farmers. Mangosteen is suitable for areas with average temperatures of 25-30°C, abundant rainfall, and high humidity. The tree needs an environment that is not subject to prolonged drought.

Mangosteen trees are suitable for sandy loam, fertile alluvial soil, well-drained, with a pH of 5.5-6.5. The soil needs to be plowed and fertilized with organic fertilizer before planting. Grafted seedlings should be selected from reputable nurseries, ensuring that the trees are free from pests and diseases and grow healthily.

Mangosteen trees are usually grown from seeds or grafted trees. Grafted trees have the advantage of bearing fruit earlier than trees grown from seeds. The distance between trees is 7-10m to ensure that the trees have space to grow widely. Mangosteen trees need to be watered regularly, especially during the dry season.

Drip irrigation system is an effective method to ensure plants always have enough water. Use organic fertilizer and NPK fertilizer according to each stage of plant growth.

During the first year, the tree needs to be fertilized regularly 2-3 times/year to ensure strong growth. Mangosteen is less susceptible to pests and diseases than other crops, but it is necessary to prevent root rot, mold and leafhopper attacks by keeping the soil well-ventilated and using pesticides properly.

Mangosteen trees usually begin to bear fruit after 5-7 years of planting, if well cared for. However, from the 10th year onwards, the yield will gradually increase and the tree can produce a stable harvest for decades after that.

Currently, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Anh, Thanh Hieu area, Binh Thanh ward, Long My town (Hau Giang province) has planted 4,000m2. Last time, he harvested 2.5 tons with a selling price of 40,000 VND/kg. He earned 100 million VND. After deducting 20 million VND in fertilizer and pesticide costs, he still had a profit of 80 million VND.

It can be said that the mangosteen growing model is a sustainable agricultural development direction, bringing high economic efficiency to farmers. However, this is a type of tree that requires long-term investment and meticulous care in the early years, but when it has entered a stable stage, mangosteen can bring a large and stable source of income.
