Mr. Huynh Van Trinh (Xom Co hamlet, Nhon Ninh commune, Tan Thanh district) converted from raising catfish fry to growing red-fleshed jackfruit and brought about economic efficiency.
Seeing that raising catfish fry was not effective, Mr. Trinh researched and decided to renovate the catfish fry pond to grow Indonesian red-fleshed, yellow-fiber jackfruit. He bought the seedlings from Cho Lach district, Ben Tre province at a price of 50,000 VND/tree.
Currently, his jackfruit garden has been harvested after nearly 2 years of planting. With 400 red-fleshed jackfruit trees, planted on an area of 6,500m2 , although this is the first harvest this year, the yield and output are quite high. On average, each jackfruit tree yields 2 fruits, weighing 7-15kg, he sells them for 43,000-100,000 VND/kg depending on the time. Normally, the price of red-fleshed jackfruit is about 10,000-15,000 VND/kg higher than other types of jackfruit. Since the harvest, he has earned about 200 million VND.
Mr. Trinh said: “This is an easy-to-grow, low-maintenance tree. It takes about 18 months from planting to harvest, faster than some other fruit trees. However, I only harvest the jackfruit garden after 24 months to ensure the tree is durable. In particular, this type of jackfruit produces large fruits that can bear fruit all year round, so there is a steady income.” In order for the jackfruit tree to produce large, round, beautiful fruits, in addition to investing and caring for it, he also actively prunes the branches, selects the fruits, and when the fruits are large enough, he bags the fruits. Jackfruit needs a lot of water but cannot withstand waterlogging, especially when bearing fruit, and pest and disease control is also easy.
Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Nhon Ninh Commune - Tran Van Cua said: "Red-fleshed jackfruit has been introduced to Vietnam for the past few years, grown by farmers in the Western provinces and attracts consumers because of its eye-catching deep orange color, thick jackfruit segments, the longer it is stored, the redder and sweeter the jackfruit becomes, the jackfruit segments are also softer, less fibrous, crispy, sweet and fragrant. The red-fleshed jackfruit growing model of Mr. Huynh Van Trinh is a new model that is attracting the attention of people in Nhon Ninh Commune as well as some neighboring areas due to its high economic efficiency"./.
