Binh Tan District has the largest sweet potato growing area in the province. Besides harvesting the tubers, people also proactively grow sweet potatoes to sell the shoots as vegetables, and this model currently brings in a fairly high income.
Accordingly, people in the district have taken advantage of newly renovated or raised-plot orchards to grow clean sweet potato leaves, both to meet their family's daily needs and to sell for extra income. Currently, depending on the time of year, the price of sweet potato leaves sold to traders ranges from 5,000-7,000 VND/kg, with an average yield of about 500kg per harvest from 1,000m2 of land.
This vegetable is easy to grow and care for, and harvesting begins about 15 days after planting. Each harvest is spaced 10-15 days apart, and harvesting can be done year-round, thus providing a relatively high income for growers.
