A strange intercropping style in Binh Dinh, peanuts planted in the same coconut garden for "double" income

In recent years, the movement of growing green coconut in Phu Cat district (Binh Dinh province) has developed strongly. Along with expanding the area, the government and people in the district have also focused on implementing many measures to gradually improve the quality, value and economic efficiency of coconut trees.

Phu Cat district currently has about 1,250 hectares of green coconut, of which nearly 1,160 hectares are bearing fruit. The green coconut area is mainly concentrated in the communes of Cat Hanh, Cat Hiep, Cat Lam, Cat Son, Cat Trinh...

Coconuts are not only grown in home gardens but also intercropped with other short-term crops such as peanuts, cassava...

Thanks to the suitability to local soil, and the farmers' investment in care and adequate pest control, the coconut tree grows and develops well.

After 3 years of planting, Siamese coconuts begin to bear fruit, and from the 4th year onwards, they produce fruit steadily, averaging 100-120 fruits/tree/year. Traders come to buy them at the garden for 6,000 VND/fruit in the rainy season, 10,000-12,000 VND/fruit in the dry season and on holidays and Tet; coconut growers earn about 1 million VND/tree/year. In addition to selling fresh coconuts, many Siamese coconut growers in Phu Cat also propagate and sell them on the market for 40,000 - 60,000 VND/tree, which is a significant source of income.

Not only is it easy to grow and requires little care, the coconut tree also solves the wastewater problem for local livestock farmers. The manure and wastewater from livestock farming are used to water the coconut trees, helping them grow well and produce more fruit than usual.

Mrs. Tran Thi Tuyet’s family in Hoa Dai village, Cat Hiep commune has more than 100 coconut trees that are bearing fruit. In addition to growing coconuts, she also raises 9 breeding sows and about 150 pigs.

She uses all the manure and wastewater from raising pigs to water the coconut trees; at the same time, during the process of planting and taking care of the coconut garden, her family applies the correct technical processes...

Thanks to that, her family's coconut garden always grows well, giving high and stable productivity. In addition, her family also chooses good coconuts to grow and sell.

Every year, her family sells 1,000 - 2,000 coconut seedlings, at 50,000 VND/tree, bringing in an income of 50 - 100 million VND. Thus, each year, coconut trees bring her family an income of nearly 200 million VND. Currently, her family has planted 200 more coconut trees on 0.5 hectares of land previously planted with acacia and upland crops.

In order to increase the value of coconut trees, Phu Cat district has built the certification brand "Phu Cat Coconut" and Phu Cat Coconut products meet 3-star OCOP standards; completed procedures for 130 households/50.29 hectares of coconut trees to be granted growing area codes aiming to export fresh coconuts to the Chinese market.

Along with that, the district also implemented an organic coconut production model with an area of 18.4 hectares in 3 communes of Cat Trinh, Cat Lam and Cat Hiep; established 2 coconut clubs in Cat Hanh and Cat Hiep communes to support each other in organizing production according to organic standards, verifying growing area codes and consuming products.

In particular, the district's agricultural sector has also supported the construction of the "my coconut tree" model in some coconut gardens to support the promotion of sustainable coconut consumption for farmers.

Mr. Luu Anh Vu, in Tung Chanh village, Cat Hiep commune (Phu Cat district, Binh Dinh province), owner of the coconut garden implementing the model, said: "The coconut trees selected for the model are large and healthy, have good hygiene conditions, high yield and must be grown according to VietGAP standards and processes.

Each coconut tree has a QR code attached, with full identification information: Tree variety, tree age, selling price, planting time. Customers can choose the tree they like and order, the average price is 800 thousand VND to 1 million VND/tree. According to the agreement, for 1 year, the buyer will enjoy all the fruits on the tree, about 100 - 120 fruits/year.

Mr. Nguyen Van Le, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Phu Cat District (Binh Dinh Province), said: "In the coming time, Phu Cat District will continue to encourage and create conditions for farmers to expand the area of coconut trees. At the same time, expand the area of organic coconut cultivation, promote joint activities in granting codes for growing areas and promoting and consuming Phu Cat coconut products."
