Trump wants to abolish the law 'born in America is American citizenship'

VnExpressVnExpress31/05/2023

Former US President Trump has vowed to abolish birthright citizenship on his first day in office if he is re-elected in 2024.

Former US President Donald Trump on May 30 posted a campaign video declaring that if he is re-elected in 2024, on his first day in office, he will issue an executive order instructing federal agencies to block the regulation that automatically grants US citizenship to people born in the US.

According to Mr. Trump's campaign, the executive order would require at least one parent to be a citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States if they want their child to automatically acquire U.S. citizenship after being born here.

Mr Trump said the order would ensure that the children of illegal immigrants would no longer automatically receive US citizenship. According to the former president, the automatic birthright citizenship policy had encouraged many illegal immigrants to enter the country.

The former US president also said that "millions" of illegal immigrants entering the US "come from mental institutions, prisons".

While in office in 2018, Trump announced that he planned to issue an executive order to limit automatic birthright citizenship, but has not done so.

Birthright citizenship is provided for in the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution, ratified in 1868. It provides that all persons "born or naturalized in the United States" are granted citizenship, even if their parents entered the United States illegally.

Mr. Trump, 76, has announced his re-election as US president in 2024 and is considered to still have great influence in the Republican Party. However, Mr. Trump also faces formidable opponents such as Florida Governor DeSantis and former US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley.
