China talks about suffering in Gaza as West criticizes human rights

(CLO) Australia, the US and 13 other countries criticized China at the United Nations on Tuesday over human rights allegations in Xinjiang and Tibet, prompting China to condemn them for ignoring "hell on earth" in the Gaza Strip.

"We call on China to uphold its international human rights obligations that it has voluntarily assumed and to implement all UN recommendations," Australia's UN Ambassador James Larsen told the UN General Assembly's human rights committee.

He spoke on behalf of Australia, the United States, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Japan, Lithuania, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

China has long denied any abuses against the Uighurs. On Tuesday, China's UN Ambassador Fu Cong accused the group of Western nations of "using lies to incite conflict".

“The human rights situation that deserves the most attention at the Commission this year is undoubtedly the situation in Gaza,” he said. “Australia and the United States, among others, have been degrading this hell on earth, while launching attacks and smears against peaceful and tranquil Xinjiang.”

Israel's war, using heavily Western weapons, in Gaza has now left nearly 43,000 people dead and thousands more buried under rubble; it has also displaced almost everyone in the enclave of 2.3 million and left it facing a humanitarian crisis.

Mr Fu said that if the death toll in Gaza was not enough to "awaken the conscience of some Western countries... then their so-called protection of human rights... is nothing more than the most blatant lie".

Last month, independent UN human rights experts criticized most Western countries for supporting Israel despite its actions in Gaza.

Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Munir Akram read a statement to the Human Rights Commission on behalf of 80 countries, saying any issues related to Xinjiang or Tibet were China’s internal affairs. The group also said it opposed “ politicization of human rights” and “double standards.”
