China "shows sympathy" to Europe, affirms not targeting a third party

According to Global Times , the above statement was made by Mr. Lou Qinjian when answering a question about how the re-election of US President Donald Trump will affect China-European Union (EU) diplomatic and trade relations.

Mr. Lau said that Beijing and the EU are two great forces for peace building, and that bilateral relations are good and stable, in line with the fundamental and long-term interests of both sides and the common expectations of the international community.

2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of China-EU diplomatic relations. What has happened in the past 50 years has repeatedly shown that there is no fundamental conflict of interest or geopolitical contradiction between the two sides, and they can even be partners who contribute to each other's success, the Chinese official said.

According to the spokesperson, bilateral economic and trade cooperation has been developing steadily in general, not only promoting economic growth on both sides, but also contributing to stabilizing industrial and supply chains as well as global economic growth. Beijing and the EU can complement each other's advantages and implement mutually beneficial policies in many areas of cooperation.

Stressing that China-EU relations are not aimed at any third party, nor are they controlled by any third party, Lou noted that the key to developing bilateral relations is to have trust and not be affected by temporary events.

The world's second largest economy affirmed its readiness to work with Europe to realize the important common perception of the leaders of the two sides, strengthen cooperation in various fields, including legislative bodies, join hands to respond to global challenges, oppose unilateralism and protectionism, promote bilateral relations on an upward trajectory, and bring stability to the world.
