The plan to bring Carlos Baleba to Old Trafford has officially collapsed. |
According to The Athletic , Manchester United have pulled out of a £120 million deal, despite the 21-year-old Brighton midfielder still wanting to play for the Red Devils.
Baleba joined Brighton from Lille in 2023 and has quickly become one of the best young midfielders in the Premier League. Last season, the Cameroon international exploded with his powerful, intelligent play, which caught the eye of Manchester United - who see him as the ideal partner for Bruno Fernandes.
However, all negotiations have stalled. While Baleba is ready to push for a transfer, Brighton are determined to keep him. Before the opening match of the 2025/26 Premier League season against Fulham, coach Fabian Hurzeler answered in four words when asked about the chances of keeping his student: "Very, very, very confident".
He stressed that Baleba is still comfortable and committed to the club and “the only change in the last two weeks is his hairstyle”.
The failure to sign Baleba has further strained United's midfield - their biggest weakness last season when they had the worst record in Premier League history. Worse, the backup target Morten Hjulmand (Sporting Lisbon) is also almost closed. The 26-year-old midfielder's £68 million release clause expires on June 15 and Sporting are reluctant to sell any more key players after Viktor Gyokeres moved to Arsenal.
With the transfer window moving quickly, coach Ruben Amorim is yet to sign a new player in midfield. MU will kick off the 2025/26 Premier League campaign with a big match against Arsenal at Old Trafford on August 17 - but with the current squad, big questions still hang over the midfield.
