Airfare prices on September 2nd skyrocket, Civil Aviation Authority requires selling tickets within price range

Airfare prices on September 2nd skyrocketed, the Civil Aviation Authority requested to "cool down" the market.

The domestic air ticket market is entering a "hot" period as the National Day holiday on September 2nd approaches, with many flights recording high prices. In this situation, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has issued an urgent document directing airlines and related units to ensure the rights of passengers and the travel needs of the people.

Specifically, the Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi route on September 2 currently has a common round-trip fare ranging from 4.5 to 7.5 million VND depending on the airline and flight time, about 30 to 50% higher than normal days. Some good-time tickets can even cost up to 5.6 to 6.5 million VND.

Beach and resort routes such as Hanoi - Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City - Phu Quoc also show an upward trend in prices as demand increases on days close to the holidays. Round-trip tickets from Hanoi to Da Nang can cost up to 3.8-4 million VND, while Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang is from 3.4 million VND.

In particular, tickets to Phu Quoc from August 29 to September 2 cost from VND5.4-8 million, which is considered as expensive as Lunar New Year or April 30. Mr. Pham Anh Vu, Deputy General Director of Du Lich Viet Company, said that high airfares to most popular destinations even though demand has not "exploded" is "completely normal" because airlines consider September 2 to be the peak period, making it difficult for travel agencies to get good price tickets and the low price range is often closed.

In this situation, airlines have also made promotional moves. Vietnam Airlines has announced a discount program for domestic flights departing from the end of August to December 31, 2025 and international flights from September 1, 2025 to May 31, 2026.

BestPrice Travel recommends that customers book domestic tickets 2-6 weeks before departure to avoid price fluctuations close to the date. International tickets in October-November usually have the best chance before prices increase during the holiday season. To save costs, BestPrice also recommends that passengers choose flexible flight times (early morning or late night), fly midweek instead of weekends, or buy a combo of airfare and hotel. Mr. Nguyen Van Dat, CEO of BestPrice Travel, recommends that customers plan early, compare multiple sources and consider buying combos to optimize costs, while also monitoring official promotional information from the airline.

In order to meet the travel demand and ensure passenger service during peak season, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has issued a "hot" directive to civil aviation units. Specifically:

Airlines must strictly comply with legal regulations on domestic air transport prices, sell tickets within the price range and price policy of the airline, and strictly control ticket sales activities of agents. It is necessary to closely monitor the situation of booking and selling tickets to promptly adjust the exploitation plan, add and increase flights on routes with high demand, especially flights to/from Hanoi in the days before and after the holidays. Airlines need to be proactive and coordinate with localities and tourism units to develop promotional programs and aviation-tourism package products (combo). Ensure ready resources in terms of aircraft and staff, strictly comply with regulations on aviation safety and security, and be dedicated and thoughtful in serving passengers. Strengthen passenger support, especially at check-in areas and check-in kiosks, encourage online procedures, and promptly resolve arising complaints and feedback. Limit the suspension of aircraft operations due to technical reasons, delays and cancellations due to airline reasons. Airports must apply operational solutions to reduce congestion at Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat airports, arrange sufficient human resources and closely monitor flight operations.

With urgent instructions from the Civil Aviation Authority and actions from airlines, it is expected that ticket prices on September 2 will “cool down”, making it easier for people to plan their travel. However, to be proactive and save costs, passengers should still plan early and choose a flexible schedule.
