"Closed" model helps Tuyen Quang livestock farmers stand firm against epidemics
According to the Environmental Agriculture newspaper, the strictly controlled farming method (no-contact model) is becoming an effective "shield", helping many farms in Tuyen Quang keep their pigs safe from dangerous pathogens. This model focuses on preventing pathogens from the root.
A typical example is the family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham, in Tan Trao village, Tan Thanh commune, Tuyen Quang province. She is one of the first people to boldly apply this solution to her herd of pigs.
Ms. Tham shared that in recent years, each outbreak has caused heavy damage to the whole village, many families have lost from hundreds to thousands of pigs. For farmers, each time an epidemic strikes, it means losing all their efforts and savings. For that reason, as soon as the Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fisheries introduced the contactless farming model, she actively registered to participate.
With a scale of nearly 100 pigs, her family has completely renovated the barn area. They set up a system of protective fences and divided isolated areas to maximize the limitation of pig contact with humans, other animals and any intermediate objects that may carry pathogens. All items, food sources and means of transport in and out must undergo a strict disinfection process. The barn is covered with a tight mesh net, regularly sprayed with disinfectants, and both water and food sources are strictly controlled.
At the beginning of applying the new model, Ms. Tham's family admitted to encountering many difficulties and hardships. However, looking at the current herd of pigs still healthy and growing well while the surrounding households are still suffering losses, she feels that all efforts are worthwhile. Ms. Tham's herd of pigs is currently growing steadily, ready for the upcoming sale, promising a bumper crop.
