Dong Nai warns of risks when restoring pig herds before Lunar New Year 2026
Before the forecast of a sharp increase in demand for pork during the 2026 Lunar New Year, Dong Nai authorities have advised farmers not to restock massively due to the potential risks of disease and market fluctuations. Mr. Nguyen Truong Giang, Head of the Dong Nai Department of Livestock and Fisheries, said that although the epidemic is under control, the province still has a total herd of more than 4.2 million pigs, of which the rate of household farming is high, so the risk of an outbreak still exists. Farmers need to carefully assess biosecurity conditions and the quality of breeding stock before expanding their scale.
Experts say that although market demand will increase at the end of the year, it is difficult for the price of live pigs to increase dramatically, because the supply in Dong Nai is still enough to meet the needs of the province, the southern region and Ho Chi Minh City. This reality makes many farmers have to consider between expected profits and risk costs.
According to Mr. Nguyen Tri Cong, Chairman of the Dong Nai Livestock Association, the prices of breeding animals, feed and veterinary medicine have all increased sharply, while many small households are facing difficulties in capital and disease control. He recommends that herd restoration should only be carried out when biosafety conditions are met and there is a clear financial plan, prioritizing maintaining stable herds and improving quality instead of massive expansion.
