Protecting pigs through contactless farming
According to information from the Environmental Agriculture newspaper, the contactless farming model, focusing on controlling disease sources from the beginning, is being effectively applied by many farming households in Tuyen Quang, contributing to protecting the safety of pig herds.
The family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham, residing in Tan Trao village, Tan Thanh commune, Tuyen Quang province, is one of the first households to implement this model for their pig herd.
Ms. Tham shared that, in recent years, whenever an epidemic broke out, almost the entire village suffered heavy losses. Many households lost from several hundred to thousands of pigs. For farmers, each outbreak of an epidemic caused them to lose all their investment capital and efforts. For this reason, when the Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fisheries implemented a contactless farming model, she decided to participate immediately.
With a total of nearly 100 pigs, her family renovated the barn, built fences, and set up separate areas to minimize contact between pigs and humans, other animals, and objects that could carry pathogens. All tools, food, and vehicles entering and exiting are carefully disinfected. The barn is covered with mesh, regularly sprayed with disinfectants, and water and food sources are controlled.
Although initially applying the model encountered many difficulties, now, when seeing the pigs growing healthy and eating well while many other households are still suffering losses, Ms. Tham feels that all her efforts are truly worth it. Currently, her family's pigs have developed stably and are ready to be sold, promising a successful farming season.
