New breed technology in the sericulture industry

In recent years, investment in research and transfer of new technology on mulberry and silkworm varieties by domestic scientific units has helped farmers increase the productivity of mulberry leaves and silkworm cocoons; while businesses have improved the quality of silk processing products, contributing to promoting sustainable agricultural economic development in Lam Dong province.

Research and create many new mulberry and silkworm varieties

Statistics show that nationwide, there are nearly 40,000 households growing mulberry and raising silkworms on a total area of about 13,900 hectares, each year achieving a cocoon yield of more than 16,800 tons, silk reaching about 2,000 tons. Of which, Lam Dong province accounts for about 74% of the mulberry area, corresponding to over 80% of the cocoon yield. This is the result of the production process through agricultural extension programs applying new technical advances, technology transfer projects in the area. Accordingly, at the Lam Dong Agricultural and Forestry Experimental Research Center, the mulberry varieties S7-CB, VA-201, TBL-03, TBL-05, TN4 have been selected and crossbred with a yield of 30 - 40 tons/ha/year, a survival rate of over 90% planted by cuttings, and the ability to resist harmful pests and diseases.

With the advantage of significantly increased yield and quality of harvested mulberry leaves, new mulberry varieties have replaced 90 - 100% of old mulberry varieties in key areas of Lam Dong province. As for silkworm varieties, Lam Dong Agricultural and Forestry Experimental Research Center has produced hybrid silkworm pairs LD-09, LD-22 with the ability to adapt to climate conditions in Lam Dong. Transferred to silkworm farming households shows that pupae vitality is over 80%; average cocoon yield is 42 - 45 kg/20g egg box; silk reaches level 3A or higher, meeting the requirements of automatic silk reeling.

“The process of transferring to farmers the process of planting and caring for new mulberry varieties combined with balanced fertilization, smart watering, and pest control has contributed to increasing the yield of old mulberry trees by 20.7% in Lam Dong province. In addition, through the transfer of the concentrated silkworm rearing process, the stage of raising young silkworms has been specialized, reducing time and production costs for silkworm rearing households. At the same time, ensuring the quality of silkworm breeds supplied for production from 1-2 households initially participating in silkworm rearing, which has now multiplied to 100 households in Lam Dong province…”, Lam Dong Agricultural and Forestry Experimental Research Center commented.

Prospects for linking "4 houses"

Lam Dong Agricultural and Forestry Experimental Research Center also continues to transfer the technique of raising large silkworms on the floor and on trays, which has reduced labor and other production costs but still ensures the cocoon yield of each batch. Currently, the rate of households raising large silkworms (age 4, 5) using trays and raising on the floor has almost completely replaced raising silkworms on trays. In addition, the center also transfers the process of preventing diseases of mulberry trees and silkworms, provides medicines to prevent silkworm diseases; transfers mulberry chopping machines, wooden baskets instead of bamboo baskets, thereby improving the efficiency and quality of harvested cocoons.

In particular, the Central Sericulture Research Center, with the support of Korean experts from the Korean International Agriculture Program in Vietnam, has successfully researched and created new hybrid silkworm varieties VH2020, which were recognized as technical advances by the Department of Livestock Production, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ) on May 19, 2023. The results transferred to Lam Dong silkworm breeders show that the VH2020 silkworm variety has a high hatching rate, 92.19% survival rate of pupae, healthy silkworms, rapid and uniform development. When harvesting cocoons, the yield is high, the cocoon weight is good, comparable to the Chinese silkworm variety LQ2...

According to experts in the Vietnamese silk industry, the transfer of technical advances has contributed to the breakthrough development of silkworm farming in the province, becoming a sustainable livelihood for tens of thousands of households in the area. However, the supply of new silkworm breeds of domestic origin only meets 2-5% of production demand. Meanwhile, some long-established silkworm growing areas are often small and unconcentrated, so they face many difficulties in applying technology and mechanized machinery.

“The transfer of technical advances and the dissemination of new mulberry and silkworm varieties in Lam Dong has been opening up a direction for effective and sustainable agricultural development. With the joint efforts of the state, scientists, farmers and businesses, we believe that the mulberry growing and silkworm raising profession in Lam Dong will increasingly flourish, making an important contribution to the local economic and social development...”, the Lam Dong Agricultural and Forestry Experimental Research Center emphasized.
