According to data from Box Office Vietnam, as of the morning of July 18, exactly 1 week before Detective Conan: Afterimage of the One-Eyed (also known as Movie 28) officially hit theaters, the film had earned 12 billion VND from pre-ordered tickets, proving Conan's strong appeal in the Vietnamese market.
Although it has been nearly 3 decades since the first part was released, the Conan movie series has shown no signs of cooling down. Recent years have witnessed the explosive popularity of the Detective Conan movie series not only in Japan but also in many other markets, including Vietnam. Continuously breaking its own records, the series about the young detective is awaiting its most successful film in the series with the 28th movie, released in April in Japan and will be released on July 25 in Vietnam.
The movie Detective Conan: Afterimage of the One-Eyed marks the return of the trio of Nagano police officers, in which the central character is police officer Yamato Kansuke - who lost an eye after a serious avalanche. 10 months later, he reunites with the group of bearded detective Mori Kogoro and young Conan when they are investigating a mysterious assassination. The two seemingly unrelated cases possess clues that lead to a single answer for all - including Yamato's vague memories of the accident years ago.
Released in early April, the 28th installment of One-Eyed Afterimage surprised audiences by becoming the highest-grossing film in the history of the entire series, welcoming 2.3 million moviegoers to theaters with a revenue of over 3.4 billion yen, an increase of 3.7% compared to Movie 27 released last year.
It is worth mentioning that Movie 27 is considered an “all-star” movie when it brings together the most fan-attracting faces of the series, including the super thief Kaito Kid and the Western detective Heiji Hattori, while the characters of Movie 28 are somewhat more unfamiliar. This confirms that the appeal of the Detective Conan movie series has become sustainable thanks to the extremely strong fandom.
Not only that, the movie Detective Conan: Afterimage of the One-Eyed possesses impressive achievements also due to the quality of the film. The new film has a score of 3.5/5, compiled from audience reviews for the film on the prestigious review site Eiga. Not focusing too much on fan-service elements, the new film emphasizes elements related to deduction and layered crime solving - which is one of the reasons that made the Conan brand famous in the first place.
Word of mouth about the quality of the film helped it climb to the No. 1 spot at the Japanese box office in 2025 with 14.4 billion yen, just a short distance from Movie 27 - the highest-grossing film in the series. Movie 28 has spent 5 consecutive weeks dominating the box office chart in Japan, 10 consecutive weeks in the top 10, despite the arrival of a series of Hollywood blockbusters this summer.
Successful in terms of revenue and audience reviews, the movie Detective Conan: Afterimage of the One-Eyed is also becoming one of the symbols of the Japanese entertainment industry. This year's marketing campaign of the movie witnessed the coverage of the young detective across Japan when collaborating with a series of big brands, most notably the collaboration with Universal Studio Japan to launch 2 new escape games, or the collaboration with the JR East train network.
Nobeyama Observatory - the main setting of the film - saw the number of visitors increase by 3.5 times compared to last year and 10 times on weekdays, helping the observatory escape financial difficulties.
