On March 17, Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son announced the decision to convert Hanoi University of Science and Technology into Hanoi University of Science and Technology and awarded the decisions to recognize the University Council, Chairman of the Council, and Director of Hanoi University of Science and Technology for the 2020-2025 term.

Specifically, Prof. Dr. Le Anh Tuan, Chairman of the Council of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, became Chairman of the Council of Hanoi University of Science and Technology. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huynh Quyet Thang, Rector of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, became Director of Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

The "old shirt" is too tight and needs a "makeover"

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son said that the transformation of the model and structure from a school to a university of the University of Science and Technology is a mark of development, when the "old shirt" is too narrow and needs to be "transformed".

According to the Minister, the words “school” and “university”, although just words, have a huge difference, reflecting the choice of a suitable development model. In fact, changing the name is not easy and takes many years. Changing from model to operation is also a huge distance.

Minister Nguyen Kim Son emphasized: "Changing a name is not quick and easy, in fact it took several years. But changing a model, an orientation, from choice to full and effective operation is a long way. Bach Khoa University needs to determine its innovation path, the path to innovation of the entire university entity is just beginning.

A university operating under a new model, with an advanced management model, a digital university, that transformation needs to be carried out simultaneously and synchronously, and it is necessary to see all the challenges that lie ahead. The transformation of the model from a university to a university is not and should not be considered a 'modern' trend, but must be seen as a tool to liberate creativity from within, a solution for creative capacities with a new mechanism. Otherwise, the change will have very little meaning.

Also at the ceremony, Hanoi University of Science and Technology announced the transfer of the positions of Vice Chairman of the Council, Vice President of the University, Secretary of the Council and Chief Accountant. Hanoi University of Science and Technology is the first school to have the Prime Minister sign a decision to transfer from “university” to “university”.

Currently, many other universities such as Can Tho University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, National Economics University, Hanoi Medical University... are also planning to develop into universities.

In addition, the Minister of Education and Training also reminded: "This model transformation should be considered a better path to realize the development aspirations of universities. Universities need to define the ideology and viewpoint for staff, employees, all workers, students; need to answer correctly and fully the question: What are we converting universities into universities for and why is it necessary to do so?".

In December 2022, Hanoi University of Science and Technology became Hanoi University of Science and Technology according to the Government's decision, the 6th university in Vietnam (5 other universities include Hanoi National University, Ho Chi Minh City National University, Thai Nguyen University, Hue University, Da Nang University).

Although there are many member schools, undergraduate, engineering, master and doctoral students are still awarded degrees from Hanoi University of Science and Technology after graduation, to ensure the connection between students and alumni with the position and reputation of this university.
