According to the decision, Hanoi University of Industry is a public service unit, a public higher education institution under the Ministry of Industry and Trade , with legal status, its own seal and account; subject to the state management of education of the Ministry of Education and Training.
Previously, in January 2025, Hanoi University of Industry completed the goal of establishing 5 schools, as a premise to change from "university" to "university", including School of Information and Communication Technology, School of Electricity - Electronics, School of Foreign Languages - Tourism, School of Mechanics - Automobile, School of Economics .
Hanoi University of Industry currently has more than 1,400 staff and lecturers, training about 35,000 students, and is among the leading schools in the country in terms of training scale.
Thus, Hanoi University of Industry officially became the 12th university in Vietnam.
The remaining universities include Hanoi National University, Ho Chi Minh City National University, Thai Nguyen University, Hue University, Da Nang University, Hanoi University of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, National Economics University, Duy Tan University, Phenikaa University, Can Tho University.
Conditions for transferring from "university" to "college"
Decree 99/2019 of the Government stipulates that establishments wishing to convert from universities to colleges must ensure three conditions: be assessed by a legal accreditation organization as meeting quality standards; have at least three schools and 10 doctoral training majors, have a full-time student population of over 15,000, and be approved by the direct management agency and investors.
Universities must also ensure that they have at least 1,000 students, train at least 5 majors, and have at least 3 doctoral training majors.
These are specific criteria for a college to convert into a university and in reality not every institution that wants to is qualified. Therefore, for those institutions that have converted into universities, it is an affirmation of their existing capacity.
The State does not give priority to universities over universities. But when transformed, universities will be better managed, utilize resources more effectively, and have greater autonomy, which is an advantage for the institutions to continue to develop.
