Iron chelation for patients with congenital hemolytic anemia

Việt NamViệt Nam19/09/2024

For the past 10 years, LVK has had to stay in the hospital to sustain his life. Without access to the Central Iron Detoxification Center, the patient has suffered many complications due to iron overload. Typically, in 2021, he had to undergo surgery to remove his spleen due to complications caused by the disease.

LVK received iron chelation at the hospital.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong, mother of LVK patient, said: “The second child was diagnosed at 7 months old and died at 17 months old. This child also got sick at 7 months old and has had to have blood transfusions twice a month since then. Before, there was no iron chelation transfusion here, so I went to Hanoi , it was very difficult, I had to borrow money from relatives.”

Diagnosed with thalassemia at 2 months of age, this child had to go to the hospital for blood transfusions twice a month (photo below). Treating the disease with multiple blood transfusions caused the child's skin to darken, the liver and spleen to swell, and he had poor appetite and sleep. Since receiving blood transfusions combined with iron chelation with Demoferidon at the Provincial General Hospital, the child's health has improved.

The patient was examined by a doctor.

Ms. Vi Thi Hinh, mother of patient HTT, shared: "My child has been sick for 10 years and has not had the opportunity to go to Hanoi for iron chelation. Since receiving iron chelation at the provincial hospital, my child has improved a lot, his skin is less dark, I hope my child will live longer."

The Department of Pediatrics, Provincial General Hospital is managing and providing blood transfusion and iron chelation treatment for 30 children with congenital hemolytic anemia. According to doctors, blood transfusion combined with iron chelation therapy will prevent iron accumulation, reduce complications caused by iron accumulation in the body, and improve and enhance the lives of patients.

Doctor Vu Le Thuy, Head of the Department of Pediatrics, Provincial General Hospital said: “The body cannot excrete iron on its own, it will accumulate in the heart, liver, tissues, and endocrine glands, causing liver failure and heart failure. Patients coming to us often have iron overload, pale skin, and enlarged liver and armpits. From the beginning of 2024 until now, patients have been given blood transfusions, iron excretion to take liver tonics.”

30 children are being managed and treated at the hospital.

Previously, 100% of children with thalassemia in the province were prescribed intravenous iron chelation and had to be transferred to the central level for treatment. Using the iron chelation drug Demoferidon intravenously for patients will contribute to improving treatment effectiveness, reducing costs, and saving time for patients.
